3.5 Star
Maddigan has worked so long to get into a top school
to make her life better. While working as a janitor at an academy for magic it
is discovered she has magic. One of the hottest mages on campus wants my help
with his friends to compete in the trials. This shouldn’t be too
difficult…right?
This book was an interesting take on magic, fated
mates, and academy. This was a human who was working her butt off only to find
out she has magic and mates. I really liked Maddigan and learning about all the
things she’s lived through to get where she is. The guys she is going to end up
with are jerks but you want to like them. I was digging all of this up until we
get the trials. This is a woman who had no idea she was a mage until recently.
She had barely had any classes under her belt before she was thrown into the
trials. The trials have been known to kill mages who have years of experience
but her and the guys can totally survive it with her weekish of training.
Nothing about the trials is ever explained to her but she’s expected to just
know. Everything up until this point was about how no one knows what the trial
will be as it changes but as soon as they are called up the guys seem to know
what needs to be done. On top of that there were some other inconsistencies.
Anyone who is injured are disqualified except her and the guys who are injured but
they’re still passed. Another one is they are told they are guaranteed a rest
after the trials before the second round but they are almost immediately called
up again and it's just swept under the rug. Overall, I enjoyed it even with
these inconsistencies.
