The Detour by K Bromberg

3 Stars

Harley Humbug has a bit of writers block.  Needing to get away from it all she decides to get away for the weekend.  What she doesn't plan for is a snowstorm that closes the interstate.  When she's detoured into a town off the beaten path she meets Saint Nick.  They're attracted to each other but neither wants anything permanent.  Will they give into temptation?

This was an interesting short novella.  IF it was fleshed out to a full length book I probably would have liked it more.  It was a wham bam thank you mam kind of story since it is only 61 pages.  Harley and Saint barely know each other when they hop into bed and then the next day they part ways.  I really would like to see the story continue and see if they get their happily ever after.

3.5 Star

Calle Stevens thought she had everything figured out until the pregnancy test came back positive.  She just started her job as assistant coach for the Gold Hockey team.  Her boyfriend broke up with her via text and wants nothing to do with her or the baby and is willing to sign away his rights. She's questioning what she how she is going to do everything.  The cherry on top of the shit sundae is losing her lunch in front of star player Cooper.  When he takes her to her obgyn for her appointment after her car died she's even more mortified.  Cooper didn't mind her leaning on him.  He's all in whether she knows it or not.  He'll use it to his advantage to keep her forever the question is will she let him.

This book was interesting.  I liked both Cooper and Calle.  My biggest issue was it felt rushed.  It went from Cooper and Calle not really knowing each other into being all in.  She's pregnant and before she has the kid she's all in with him and vice versa.  There was no real relationship development between them before this.  It was just a little bit much for me.  It was still good and the characters were good just not my favorite trope.

Six brand new short stories in the Rough Riders series featuring some amazing recipes.  A brief look at what Cord and AJ, Colby and Channing, Keely and Jack, Colt and India, Carter and Macie, and Boone and Sierra are doing in their happily ever after.

These were all cute little shorts featuring characters from the Rough Riders series.  You really need to have read the previous books to get the characters but the stories stand on their own.  The context isn't there if you haven't read them (or read recently).  It's been a while since I've read the series and I enjoyed the refresher and a look at where the characters were at.  I also like the recipes included and plan on trying some out.

Dallas is called to an apartment in the West Village where she finds an apartment set up for seduction and a murdered artist.  Her investigation takes her to society darling, Gwen.  Gwen claims she had been there for a sitting with the artist she was commissioning for fiancĂ©.  Her story isn't adding up and the more Dallas digs into her story and her past the more questions they have.  When her investigation leads to a extremists church, Dallas will have to work with the FBI and international police to uncover all the secrets.

This was a very slow start for me.  It did pick up and I couldn't put it down once I got about a quarter into it.  My biggest gripe was the ending felt unfinished.  All of the people are arrested and being charged as normal but there were people introduced and you don't find out what happened to them.  There was one woman Dallas interviewed a missing person report for her brother.  He just up and disappeared on her and I still don't know what happened to him.  Maybe it will be addressed in another book because Nadine writes a story about this case but it was just something niggling at the back of my head.  This case also reminded me of the Icove case.  It wasn't about clones but about a religious group that kidnapped women.  They married them off and subjugated them.  Overall my issues with the book were minor and I did enjoy the plot and how we got from an artist's murder to taking down a major church.

The other Rebecca on team Gold has worked hard to create healthy meals for the players.  She earned her PhD in Nutritional Sciences to create the perfect athlete.  Dr. Gabe Carter didn't really appreciate what Rebecca brought to the table for the hockey team.  He thinks everything she creates is too restrictive and doesn't have any benefits to the team.  When she brings some suggestions to the board about making the athletes even better he argues against them.  When he finally starts seeing the benefits will he be able to get her forgiveness?

I was looking forward to these two finding their happy ending but I was not a huge fan of this book.  I still loved Rebecca but Gabe was a massive dick.  He didn't really do anything to redeem himself in my eyes.  He mansplained her job to her and used the same research she GAVE him to do it.  She did call him on it but it just rubbed me the wrong way.  There were way better books in the series.

Containing Malice by Cynthia Sax

3 Star

C Model Malice has been held for experimentation by the Humanoid Alliance.  He has been tortured in everyway possible but is determined to kill all of his tormentors.  The number one on his hit list is Illona.  She has run experiments on him for several cycles and hurt him.  What he doesn't know is she is just as much a prisoner as he is.  They run experiments on her and will continue to use her after she is dead.  She is tortured when she doesn't do as they say just as much as Malice is.  When the end is in sight for Illona she will find away to get Malice and his friend out no matter the risk.  Will he trust her enough to escape?

This was not one of my favorite ones by Cynthia Sax.  It was very reminiscent of Rage but that one was written way better.  I also didn't like the hate Illona had thrown at her by Malice, even after she confided in him.  When they are finally rescued she is still self-sacrificing and it got old real fast.  Overall, read some of her other books as she has better ones.

3.5 Star

Anna Hayes is trying to decide what to do with her life since she isn't needed as a nanny anymore.  She gets along with everyone except Blue.  Blue is the playboy of the Gold team.  She doesn't need that in her life.  Blue has seen all of his friends fall for their women and wants to stay far away from love.  It's working out well until he kissed prickly Anna, now he can't get her out of his head.  Can he break through her defenses and win her over?

We met Anna in a previous book and I really liked her.  She seemed down to earth and had her shit together.  Blue was a bit of an asshole through previous books and parts of this one.  I did like seeing them come together in the end but they weren't my favorite couple.  I got tired of the we can't be together for whatever reason but I can't stay away.  It wasn't a bad book just not one of my favorite.

Rebecca Stravokraus has worked hard to get where she is.  She is supposed to spin any story for the Gold to be the best story out there.  When Kevin decides they are meant to be together he will pull out all the stops to get her see that age is just a number.  She is firmly in the category of LOVE is overrated and hot sweaty nights are one thing but actual forever love no thank you.  Will Kevin wear her down?

Rebecca's past is heartbreaking.  I was rooting for her from the beginning and wanted her to have her happy ending.  Kevin was so sweet and was willing to hold out for everything with Rebecca.  I liked seeing the age difference between them with Rebecca being older than Kevin.  Overall, a good addition to the series.

4 Star

Meeting a bunch of Eon Warriors after the successful implementation of the laser weapon Commander Kaira Chand of the Australian Air Force, was surprised to feel instantly connected to Medical Commander Thane Kann-Eon.  After losing her husband and father in the same attack by the Kantos she is uninterested in finding love again.  All Thane has wanted was a match with someone but he can't force himself to mate someone who isn't interested even if it kills him.  When they are kidnapped off earth and dropped on a training camp island for the Kantos they will need to work together to get out of the mess their in.  They meet some surprising allies along the way.  With the help will they be able to take out Kantos leaders?

This one was a lot different from the last couple of books.  Yes they were kidnapped and dropped on another planet but that is about the only similar part.  I loved them showing how they had to fight their way around the planet to get a message off world to their people.  One of the best parts was the fact that they found some Kantos who weren't evil and wanted to help them.  Loved seeing it since in life not everyone is evil.  It will be interesting to see what they do with the next and last (maybe) one with the King.

Max seems to have everything going for him.  He's at the height of his career.  His kid has adjusted to Max's divorce and is doing well in school.  The one thing not working out well is his love life.  He's seeing all his friends finding their partners and wishing things could be different.  Even his son Brayden is wanting him to find love.  Brayden is desperate for a new mom. When Max meets Mandy's half sister, Angelica he is intrigued by her.  He wants to encourage her to connect with Mandy but doesn't want to overstep.  Angelica is very interested in meeting her half sister but is worried.  When Max starts in on her it makes it even harder for her to stay away from her sister.  Will she be able to work through her own issues with her dad to find a family?

Angelica was handed just as crappy of a hand as Mandy and you feel for her.  She's trying to decide if she's causing more harm by connecting with her sister.  As you read through the her reasons you feel for her.  Watching her connect with Max on all levels was heartwarming.  One of the big reasons why I loved the book so much was when Max royal fucked up she understood why he did and they talked it out.  She didn't make him beg for forgiveness.  This was a really good addition to the series. I also still wanted to kill Angelica's dad.

After an attack on earth by the Kantos, Weapons scientist Dr. Finley Delgado is desperate to get her tech up to protect the earth from any future attack.  The Eons send Security Commander Sabin Solann-Ath to help earth scientists and keep them all safe.  Within hours of arriving Finley is attacked by some Kantos bugs.  When another attack happens it's decided to move Finley to a secret facility in Australia.  Even there they're not safe.  Will they be able to get the machine up and protect earth from the Kantos?

I enjoyed this book to a certain degree.  Finely and Sabin with interesting characters and they both struggled with their attraction to each other.  One of the issues I had with the book was Finley's jealousy.  She repeated told him she wasn't interested but then was pissed because he was talking to another woman.  Um you don't want him so no one else can have him.  I don't think so.  They also did the kidnapped by the Kantos to a mystery planet and must save themselves from the evil Kantos.  Just a bit tired of this model.  Overall, I'll still pick up the next book as I liked most of this one but here's hoping it does things a little bit different.

I really enjoyed seeing Mandy and Blane come together.  Mandy was a bit bumbling about everything.  She had a crappy family growing up and had a lot of issues because of her treatment.  The way she had to work through her hang ups to except that Blane wasn't like her dad in anyway was really awesome.  This was by far one of the better books in the series.  You will want to go and kill Mandy's parents for the things they did to her.

Radoo by Celia Kyle and Anne Hale

1 Star

Livvy has no love for the Dragons of Preor.  She wants them off Earth and doesn't believe they are there for some benign reason.  When her group plants bombs to take out those who support the Preor and the Preor themselves Livvy tries to stop them.  In the process she finds out she is mated to Radoo.  Livvy isn't sure she wants Radoo but the mating sickness will kill her if she stays away from him.  Radoo has waited centuries for his fated mate.  He's not sure what to do with a mate who seems to hate everything about him.  Will he bring her around?

I've read this series from the beginning.  When they started they weren't the most literary book in the world but they were cute and I liked the characters and the premise of the story.  Several books back the series took a turn.  It didn't feel like a good turn but I was willing to give it a chance.  I at least still sort of liked the characters.  The last one I bought was book 11.  I HATED that book and the characters.  Book 12 wasn't any better so when this one came out I was going to give it one more shot to be better.  This one was the worst of the last three.  Livvy was a horrible woman who didn't deserve any good things coming her way.  She let her fear and hate take over everything.  What pissed me off the most with this book was even though she was part of the group who actively tried to set bombs off all was forgiven.  Not only forgiven but she is put in charge of the military that she abandoned.  There wasn't a single redeeming characteristic about her.  Radoo deserved so much better for his partner.  I don't understand why Ms. Kyle and Hale feel woman who either aren't mentally able to consent or want to even be with these aliens make good heroines.  They don't and I walk away from reading a book mad.  I think I am officially done with the series unless I see a different cowriter or it go back to just Celia Kyle.

I love Sara and Mike.  They were such a cute couple.  The sort of proposal was so freaking cute.  I figured out how some of the issues had popped up for both of them but the getting there was well worth the read.  The only question I have is if her family came back after the truth came out about the cheating?  Really good addition to the series.

I loved these two characters.  With everything Airen had been through I wanted her to get her happy ending.  I had a couple issues with this book though.  One they knew Airen was who the Kantos were looking for so they sent her on a mission.  Why would you send someone on a mission when the bad guys are looking to kidnap her.  It just didn't make sense to me.  The second thing was the fighting with Kantos is the same in every book.  Take characters put them in new book same results.  Just frustrating.  Overall, I enjoyed the book and characters but tired of the same old action.

I really enjoyed this book.  The couple is older and established.  I liked seeing them come together and working through the bombing and melding their lives.  The bomber was interesting and I loved seeing all of the SEAL teams in this book.  Even though it is book 7 you can read it alone if you didn't want to read the entire series.  Definitely a good addition to the series.

Holy shit the ending to this book was a giant surprise.  I can't believe the way this book ended.  I wasn't sure if I liked this book until I realized I was done with it and wanted more.  You got to see another side of pack life with those who are damaged and need to be monitored and can't be with a pack.  The bad guy was a complete and total surprise.  It was not who I expected and can't believe who it was.  It made me rethink every interaction everyone had with this character in every book they were in.  Trying to keep ambiguous to not ruin the surprise of who it was.  Definitely an amazing addition to the series.

I enjoyed this story a lot.  Braun is a sweetheart.  But the real winner of the book was Angela's grandfather.  I adored the parts with him in it.  He helps Braun come to grips with some of his issues from his service.  The miscommunication between Braun and Angela was adorable and it fit the book perfectly.  Was a really good addition to the series.

This book was a little slow for me.  It went in a lot of different directions that in the end made sense but it took a while to get there and the road to the end just was kind of meh for me.  It was interesting to see friends from Charles' past and it was incredible sad how it all worked out.  The writing was spot on it just the plot frustrated me.

Until a woman who’s been right in front of him for years manages to impress Storm in a way very few women—or men—ever have.

Jane Hamilton knows it’s ridiculous to have a crush on the charismatic and handsome commander. She’s the divorced mother of a twenty-six-year-old daughter. Too old for crushes. Too old for a lot of things. There’s no chance she’ll ever catch the eye of a man like Storm North.

Until someone delivers a bomb to the base.

As the civilian contractor in charge of the mail room, Jane finds herself in the direct line of fire, enduring a series of events that leads to a budding relationship with the very man she’s been longing for. She couldn’t be happier, and Storm feels the same.

The only one unhappy, in fact, is the thwarted bomber. Unhappy enough to do something drastic. Now Storm and Jane have to work together to save innocent sailors—and themselves—from an explosive situation threatening their happily ever after.

Brit has finally been drafted to the big league as a goalie for the Gold Hockey team.  She's used to all the bull of being the only female on a professional team.  What she doesn't anticipate is liking her team and wanting to get way closer to the captain, Stefan.  When some scandalous pictures come to light Brit is blackmailed into a pretend relationship with Stefan.  Two problems with that. One he doesn't know and two she doesn't want it to be pretend.

This is the one time I am glad I started with a later book.  This book was ok.  There were a lot of clichĂ© moments in this book.  What I liked was the main character was a woman playing professional hockey.  She works her ass off to get where she's at and has to deal with a lot of shit to get there.  I liked the chemistry between Brit and Stefan.  I didn't like her lying to him to keep people out of trouble.  If she had just been honest then a lot of the BS wouldn't have happened.  I also didn't like some of the stuff with Stefan's mom.  The way it was written she did something pretty bad ish that affected Stefan his entire life.  Like it wasn't intentional but it was bad and had a lot of consequences and it was just kind of swept under the rug.  It was interesting to read to get the context of the series but not one of the better books in the series.  Start with one of the other ones first.

The FBI has requested the help of the werewolves with a serial killer who has taken a werewolf.  Adam was supposed to go but with Mercy injured he wasn't willing to leave her.  Bran opts for Anna.  If Anna is going so is Charles.  Charles has been struggling with his job as an enforcer and having to put down more wolves who break the rules.  He's pulled back from Anna and she hopes this will pull him out of his self and get him to talk.  Will he be able to get through his issues in time to save Anna from the serial killers?

This was borderline 3.5 and 4.  I loved seeing the struggles Charles was having with being the pack enforcer.  There is one scene that bothered me.  There was a team who went to an island to find the victim who they knew was a rape victim and Charles and Anna had sex on the island.  There was a reason, the spirits on the island were bringing out some of her insecurities and the only way Charles could get through to her was through sex.  I get the reason but it just was kind of eww.  Other than that one part the book was good.  It had a whole lot more Fae and how the government works with the werewolves.  Overall, a good addition to the series.

It began with a cock.

Of the rooster variety.

It ended with a groomsman toppling into the wedding cake.

Heidi hadn’t meant to be a bad bridesmaid. She loved her best friend and the man Kate was marrying.

Who she didn’t love?

The groom’s brother.

The cocky—no pun intended—jerk had made Heidi aware of exactly what he thought of her. That being, she wasn’t worth anything more than a quick romp and a disappearing act before the sun rose.

Fine. Whatever. She’d done her own version of the Disappearing Act on more than one occasion. It didn’t matter that she had thought they had shared something . . . well, something more.

Clearly, she’d been wrong, and now he was dead to her.

Of course, that was before she had to walk down the aisle with him.

Because that’s when all hell broke loose.

I enjoyed reading this book.  Anna is coming into herself more.  She more open and willing to except the love from Charles.  I loved seeing her get both Bran and Charles to listen to reason.  The ending was really good and I enjoyed the twists to the end.  I want to know more about the pack who hosted the summit.  I know some of them have a short story but I would love to see more about them.  Can't wait for the next book.

The Challenge by Susan Kearney

 3 Star

Tessa Carmen, Secret Service Agent, is willing to give her life for the president.  When she jumps in front of a bullet to save the president she wakes up in the future.  She is told she will be doing the Challenge to get Earth into the Federation.  She needs to rely on mysterious alien Kahn to prepare for the Challenge.  Kahn doesn't know what to do with this outspoken woman.  He needs her to succeed at the Challenge to save his people from starving.  When they're forced to marry will they be able to meld their beliefs and live happily together?

I wanted to like this book more.  I enjoyed Tessa banter with the computer Dora and pretty much everyone else except for Kahn she's supposed to end up with.  I hated him.  She's went from thinking she was going to die to jumping 3 centuries into the future and just supposed to except everything as he says it.  He wants her to change everything to suit him.  There is one scene that made me not like the book.  As part of the challenge she is given a million credits.  Key word here is SHE is given.  Well she ends up investing in stuff for his world and spends all of the credits.   He gets mad because HE had plans for it.  Never lets her explain.  Decides he's going to punish her sexually to prove he's in control and leaves her wanting because that's his right as the man.  This would have been fine if she didn't immediately forgive him.  Like instantly forgiven him.  The other issue was later on his home world.  A group of his people try and kill her because she saved a boy from drowning.  Her thanks was to be shoved into the water and nearly drowned herself.  What happens is all is forgiven because the women were confused.  Overall, the writing was good which is why the 3 and not lower rating but there were some major issues with the story itself.  I am going to see if the next book is better.

Anna and Charles head home to Montana after cleaning up the mess in Chicago.  Before they can settle in Charles is ordered to go into the mountain to track down a rogue wolf who attacked a human.  Charles doesn't want Anna to join him and see him have to kill someone but is ordered to take her with.  While in the mountains they will have to work together to bring down evil trying to take over the wolf pack.

I loved seeing how Charles and Anna navigate a new relationship when their wolves have already accepted the other.  Anna gets to see more of what Charles does for the pack and his father and has to decide if she can live this life.  She struggles with all of it and that's life.  She hasn't had it easy, she didn't pick it, and now she's mated.  It's a lot to handle and you can see the struggle.  Meanwhile, you have Charles who is dealing with a new experience and can't figure out how to work with her history and still do his job.  It's interesting to see the struggle he has.  It was a good addition to the series and it built off the short story nicely.  Can't wait to read the next one.

Alpha and Omega: A Companion Novella to Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs

5 Star

Anna Latham didn't sign up to be a werewolf.  She is and she has to live with it.  When she discovers a boy was killed that had been at the pack house she calls the Marrok.  He sends his son Charles to sort out the Chicago pack.  He will have to decide what he's going to do and how he's going to talk Anna into going home with him.

There is a content warning with this book.  Anna was brutalized prior to events in the book and it is mentioned.  This is book is how the Alpha and Omega series starts and links to Mercy books I've previously reviewed..  It is during Moon Called in the timeline.  I loved how this one worked out.  Charles is old in all things and he falls for Anna almost right away.  He realizes she is an omega and is trying to give her all her options without forcing her to do anything and it is so cute.  I also loved that even though she had been beat down repeatedly she still holds her own.  The end of this book leads into the next book immediately.

Call to Engage by Tawny Weber

4 Star

After a mission gone wrong, Lieutenant Elijah Prescott is trying to spend his leave with his cousin.  He's trying to figure out how it all went so wrong and if he wants to stay in the SEALs.  He ends up connecting with an old love who just wants to be casual,  When things get hard will Ava Monroe step up and help Elijah?

This was a library book sale find and I liked it a lot.  The mystery behind the mission was interesting with it being an inside man and how that was resolved.  I also loved seeing Ava and Elijah come back together after years apart.  It was interesting to see the growth Ava made from when they were first together to today.  When you find out what drove them apart to begin with and when she finally excepts him after something major happens I ended up giving her some major props.  Military spouses get the short end a lot and this book shows why and how hard it is.  I will be checking out the other books in the series.
