Hell Hounds Don't Heel by Kim McDougall

3 Star

Kyra is still waiting on Mason to return from France.  It's been months with no word.  To top off the stress of not knowing what happened with Mason his ex wife is creating chaos in town for all the guardians.  Kyra will need to find away to keep everyone safe and take out the ex before she gets too powerful.

There were too many too stupid too live moments in this book.  I don't know if this is the last book in the series or if McDougall will be continuing it but this is my last book.  It finished the arc from book one with the stone and Mason's ex wife and I am good with being done.  Considering all of the training Kyra and Mason should have had they shouldn't be as stupid as they are.  They nearly die way too many times and it got old.  I am still unsure about the world and characters as there is no development with either in any of the books.  The best I can say is the book concludes the arc nicely and there is somewhat of a happy ending.

The Bodyguard by Anna Hackett

4 Star

Princess Sofia of Caldova is visiting San Francisco under the guise of displaying the Caldova jewels.  What she really wants is to find the men responsible for the rape of her friend that lead to the friend killing herself.  She needs them to pay even if it means putting herself at risk.  What she doesn't plan for is being watched by Rome Nash.  Rome is the ultimate professional.  Even after Sofia had kissed him he kept it professional but he didn't want to.  He wanted her but shouldn't have her that is until her life is in danger.

I really enjoyed finding out who was out to get Sofia.  The struggle Rome had was fun to read.  There weren't any time in this book that I felt Sofia was to stupid to live.  She actually kicked ass and listened when Rome told her to run.  The big bad was interesting and wasn't who I thought it was and I love being surprised.  Overall, a good addition to the series and definitely a good read.

Dervishes Don't Dance by Kim McDougall

3 Star

Kyra Greene is doing what she always does.  Tracking down creatures that are causing trouble and moving them outside the city where they won't bother others.  While performing this task she discovers that those with major magic are going missing.  Human, Fae, and others alike are missing and no one is interested in finding them.  She decides to try and track down where these people are going and why.

These are books you really need to read in order.  This book builds off of the last book.  Kyra and Mason are still sniffing around each other.  I felt there was a bit of a pacing issue with this book.  The beginning was incredibly slow and then about the halfway point it picked up and ran.  The book also leaves a lot strings left untied and makes it so I have to pick up the next book to see if things are resolved.  Some of it makes sense but others not so much.  The issue with book one where Kyra didn't want to kill anyone continues into this one but also trusts everyone even when they shouldn't be trusted and have shown they shouldn't be trusted.  It was very frustrating.  Overall, if it weren't for cliffhanger esq ending I would not have picked up book 3.

Sex on the Seats by Elise Faber

4 Star

Dominique didn't know why she was at the bar.  It's not her scene but she can't leave as the bartender is making her long for more in her life.  Archer stayed late because this woman enthralled him.  When she offers one night he can't say no.  One night isn't all he wants he just needs to talk her into more.

I really enjoyed this story.  In fact I got to the end and said wait that's all of it.  I got through it so fast it didn't feel like a long story.  I enjoyed seeing Dominique work through her issues and move to wanting more than a one night stand.  Everything just worked for me with this story.  You don't need to read the rest of the books in the series to read this one but it will help.  If you're looking for a quick light read this is a good book to pick up.

Dragons Don't Eat Meat by Kim McDougall

3 Stars

Kyra Greene is still saving as many creatures as she can.  When she is releasing her latest rescue in the forest she stumbles upon dragons digging up graves eating gold and jewels.  She soon realizes they are being enslaved for some purpose and she can't let the slavers win. Kyra gets more than she bargains for with her rescue.  She ends up on poop watch with a baby dragon as the poor baby ate a very dangerous gem stone and Mason, head of the Guardians, needs that stone back NOW.  They will have to team up again to search for the dragon's family while they wait for the stone to pass.

This was an ok book.  There were parts that really frustrated me.  Kyra refuses to kill anyone for reasons but yet she runs headlong into battles.  You can't have it both ways.  Some of the "issues" wouldn't have been as anticlimactic if she actually was willing to kill.  You kind of get the world has been flooded with magic and everyone has to live in specific cities that have huge protections on them.  That is the extent of the world building.  I need more information.  The other big glaring issue I had was Kyra and Mason are on this quest.  Kyra is kidnapped and Mason goes back to the city.  Doesn't really try and find her or the dragon.  Ummmm please don't go on a quest with Mason because you will end up lost and no one will care.  The story itself was interesting and I enjoyed it enough to read the rest of the series but there could have been things tightened.  Plus it needed some world building to make it more enjoyable.

Three Half Goats Gruff by Kim McDougall

3 Star

Kyra Greene is the city's pest control.  She's called in to handle anything weird that needs to be moved outside the city.  On a day when she was hoping to head home early she is notified there are three half goats that need to be removed before they cause too much trouble.  She gets those three plus more.

I read this after all of the other books in the series.  I don't feel it aided in understanding the series better.  This also didn't clear up any of my questions I had with the first book (tomorrows review).  There isn't any world building or character development.  I felt thrown into the story and the only reason I wasn't confused was because I had already read the other books.  Overall, it was cute and it did give some information from the first book.  Don't start with this one but start with book 1.

A Favor for a Favor by Helena Hunting

A Favor for a Favor (All In Book 2) by [Helena Hunting]

4 Star

Stevie is having a very crappy day.  It's her birthday and she thought she would surprise her boyfriend by coming out earlier than planned.  Instead she's surprised by finding him with another woman.  Her brother hooks her up with a place to stay and her new neighbor is a jerk and she still has to work with her ex.  Bishop thinks is new neighbor is the mistress to his teammate and doesn't want to like her.  That is until he's injured on the ice and needs her help to rehab his injury to get him off the injured list faster.

This was a very slow burn book.  It takes a while for Stevie and Bishop to officially get together and I enjoyed the ride getting there.  I didn't like Stevie's brother overly much.  He kind of pissed me off through most of the book.  He never bothered to find out if Bishop was serious just assumed he was interested just for revenge against him.  This caused issues and it made me mad.  Overall, I enjoyed the book and will be checking out the next one.

Chaos Reigning by Jessie Mihalik

Chaos Reigning: A Novel (The Consortium Rebellion Book 3) by [Jessie Mihalik]

4 Star

Caterina is the youngest daughter of House von Hasenberg.  She is the one left out as everyone thinks she needs to be protected.  Her older siblings love her and want to protect her but after her brother's attack she isn't willing to sit idle on the sideline.  When she plans to go to a party to spy her older sister allows it but only if she excepts two new bodyguards.  Alexander Sterling must go with her.  Cat allows it but under protest.  She plans on ignoring him but Alex proves to be more difficult to ignore.  When everything goes to hell on Earth while she's away she's determined to get back on Earth to try and protect her family's holdings and keep those she love safe.  Will she be able to let down her guard enough to allow Alex in?

Where the last book was slow and I was bored this book was the opposite.  I enjoyed this one.  This moved along nicely and I enjoyed seeing Cat and Alex figure things out.  The one big issue that I didn't like was this was the last book in the series and I felt there were too many loose threads by the end.  We find out her parents are dead due to the takeover and her brother and some of the people who take over because of the death a lot of the heads of households.  However, one of the houses who was in on the takeover had some heirs being blamed that weren't part of it and a deal was struck but nothing else came of it.  I wanted to know if Cat was able to keep the two safe.  There were a couple of other things like this that were left without conclusion and it frustrates me since no more books in the series.  It might not bother others but it did me.  Overall, those were small part of the rest of the series and I still enjoyed it.

The Wallflower Wager by Tessa Dare

The Wallflower Wager: Girl Meets Duke by [Tessa Dare]

3 Star and I feel like I am being generous with that 3

Lady Penny has been left to her own devices to rescue animals and find them a proper home.  When she loses her new parrot to the neighbors house she decides she will just let herself in to bring it home.  What she doesn't plan on is running into the new owner Gabriel.  Gabriel needs her to not have so many animals around so he can sell the house he is remodeling but he needs her to stay so people will want to buy his house for the connection to Lady Penny.  To help keep her he agrees to help rehome all the animals.  He doesn't expect it to take that much time but Lady Penny isn't going to let just anyone take them home.  The more time they spend together the more he doesn't want to let her go.

The writing was like all of her other books but I was a bit bored with this one.  I also felt like the story was more modern for a historical romance.  Modern issues are thrown in as a big to do.  Penny is weird and not in a cute way and she frustrated me.  The characters also felt more one-dimensional than other books.  We find out more about Penny's pets than about Gabriel's past. He  grew up and was in the work house but that is about all we know about him.  Not what lead to him being there or how he got out of them.  Overall, meh.

Audio:

Loved listening to Mary Jane Wells.  She did an excellent job giving each character a voice that was distinctly theirs.  She did the best she could with the story she was narrating. I also didn't have any issues listening to the British accent at a faster speed.  She is definitely a narrator that I will be listening to again.

Hannah is forced by her mother to serve her stepfather with divorce papers for Christmas.  What she doesn't plan for is her former boyfriend showing up for a boat ride.  They are stuck together for the near future.  Will they be able to work through past hurts to find their happy?

For a short story this wasn't a bad story but it wasn't my favorite either.  I wanted more backstory for Hannah and James.  It was interesting to see them work through their problems but I think more backstory would have helped me get there faster.  If it had been a longer story the issues I had wouldn't have been there and I would have connected better with the characters.  Overall, it fit into the series but left me wanting more.

Night Shift Dragons by Rachel Aaron

Night Shift Dragons (DFZ Book 3) by [Rachel Aaron]

4 Star

Opal Yong-ae fought the dragon and is still stuck with him.  She wanted a break from her father not for him to be dead.  She made a deal with the keeper of Detroit to be her attendant, receive training, and to take care of Detroit.  She will need all of her training and all of her allies to save Detroit, Nik, and her father from destruction.

This is the final book in the series and it was good.  I wasn't a huge fan of the last book but this book made up for it.  Opal finally grew up and was making smart decisions as well as thinking before she leaped.  I loved seeing how it all worked out between her and her dad, her and the city, and her and Nik. Opal finally found a way to work with her dad and by working together they were able to solve some of the other issues.  It wrapped up the story nicely and felt there had been growth in all the characters.  It also left the world open to another story if the author wanted to write another one.

4 Star

Waze spent her childhood as a foster child.  She had one perfect home that ended in tragedy and she went back into the system before aging out.  Her foster sister never gave up on her and when Cat is engaged to be married Waze is forced to go home again.  There she will have to confront her past in hopes to having her HEA.

I am going to start with this is book 6 in a series but you don't need to have read the rest of the series to enjoy this book.  It is set in the same location and sometimes overlapping characters but nothing you would need to know to understand the story.  Jill Shalvis does an amazing job creating characters and plots that pluck at the heartstrings.  This book is no different.  This book includes two couples getting a happy ending and I really enjoyed the getting there.  I was very vested in finding out how everything was going to work out.  For Cat and her fiancé I didn't want them to have their happy ending.  He was a dick and deserved to be shown the door way sooner than he was.  There was some backstory for all of the people that would have enhanced the story overall but it didn't detract from the story.  Can't wait for the next book.

Dutiful daughter of High House von Hasenberg Bianca has always done what she has been told but also worked around the rules to make sure people stay safe.  When there is an assault on the house and her older brother is kidnapped and assumed dead she is determined to find him and bring him home.  She doesn't believe he's dead and just needs to find him.  When head of house security Ian Bishop orders her to come home so she will be safe, she refuses.  They end up compromising and working together to track down the missing heir.  Will they be able tor rescue the heir and keep their own hearts safe?

Where the first one I loved this one was not so much loved.  This book dragged on and on and on.  I didn't feel a connection between Bianca and Ian.  It took until almost the end for there to be any kind of relationship between Ian and Bianca.  The idea and concept of the book was interesting but there needed to be better pacing and maybe some editing.  I also got tired of the ghost of Gregory.  Figure your shit out already was said repeatedly while listening to this book.  There were parts I skipped I was so bored and other than one time didn't really feel I missed anything.  Overall, I want to find out how the series ends but this book nearly turned me off of the series.

Audio: 4 Star for the narrator.

Emily Woo Zeller did an amazing job narrating this book.  She did her very best to give each character a voice.  She did her very best to keep the book moving.  I would listen to another book narrated by her.

Vampire: A Dark Protectors/Rebels Novella by [Rebecca Zanetti]

3.5 Star

Dr. Mariana Lopez has been on the run for a while.  She was hiding out from a stalker.  While hiding out she decided to be the moderator for an anger management program that was filled with supernatural beings, not that she was aware that was the case.  Raine Maxwell knows the good dr is his mate but isn't willing to put her at risk of his curse until her life is put at risk then he will do whatever it takes to keep her safe.

This was a good short story to add to the overall Dark Protectors series.  It was amazing to finally get the backstory to Mariana and see her for her happily ever after,  My biggest issue with the book itself was the bad guy and how it played out.  It was obvious and the ending with him was anticlimactic.  Even with that I enjoyed the story and can't wait for what's next.

Dani is incredibly shy and doesn't know what to do with the people around her unless it has to do with electronics.  She is surrounded everyday by hot men but there is only one she really wants, Ethan.  When he makes a move for her, she thinks he just needs help with some electronics but he wants her heart.  Will he be able to get through her shyness to prove to her he's all in?

This couple was so freaking cute.  I loved how Ethan just wanted to be with Dani, weirdness and everything.  This was also one of those slowburn stories as Ethan had wanted Dani for years until he made his move.  He knew Dani wasn't ready so he bided his time until he took his shot.  She had more negative thoughts about whether they belonged together then he did.  There were some inconsistencies in Dani's character.  One minute she is this quiet mouse who doesn't know what to do with people around her ready to give up her man because someone thought he and lady b would look cute together.  Then the next minute she is telling like it is and making demands.  It was a bit whiplashy for me.  Overall, I enjoyed the story and can't wait for the next book.

Finding Elodie by Susan Stoker

3 Star

This review contains spoilers...huge spoilers

Elodie loves to cook.  When she took on a job as a private chef she is over the moon.  That is until her boss asks her to poison a guest.  This is when she finds out her dream job is working for a mob boss.  On the run she takes a job on ship that travels all over the world.  Everything is great until the boat is boarded by pirates.  She is able to hide from them and is rescued by a SEAL team.  She feels an instant connection to Scott "Mustang".  He gives her his number but she loses it begore she can call him.  All she knows is he's in Hawaii so after getting a payout from her employer she uproots her life to track him down.  When she finds him will the spark still be there?

I just liked this book.  Wasn't a huge fan of Elodie.  She is way too naïve and bit ridiculous throughout this whole story.  At no time did she consider going to the police for help.  Ok fine not sure who might be in his pocket so she joins a ship that's taken over by pirates even without seeing Scott she is instantly attracted to him.  It was a lot.  Genius that is Elodie she decides to take a job on a charter boat which is hired by everyone.  This bares repeating...the boat is hired by everyone. So the mafia is after you and you don't consider they might find you and hire your boat thus taking you and anyone else on the boat out? Other than the plot issues the writing was spot on I just couldn't get past some of these issues I had with the story.

This book takes up right where we left off with book 1.  This book does expand on the world and the Gods more.  I didn't like Willa's internal monologues.  It got old fast.  Once again there is no romance in the book.  The brothers actually make an agreement to treat her like one of the brothers.  Which is interesting as none of them want to treat her like a brother.  It was an ok book and I still want to find out how this is going to work out.

This book starts in such a way it makes me think it is part of another series.  I was very confused reading it.  Like I was missing all the history that lead to the things happening in this book.  It has an interesting premise but feel it really missed the mark on the book.  There were things talked about in the book but I am still not sure what all it meant.  I was also not a huge fan of any of the characters.  Cat was MarySue sunshine no matter the situation.  Including when one alien race tries to kill her.  She's good to go within ten minutes.  It just overall didn't work for me.

Minatsol there are those who have and those who don't.  If you are born without you're a dweller and will spend your life serving those better than you.  Willa was born a dweller and she was meant to serve those who could be come a God or Goddess without complaint.  She has the cursed luck and if it can go wrong it does.  The ground trips her as she walks.  When she fudges her and her sisters school scores they are sent to the main city to serve sols who might one day become a god/goddess.  Her cursed luck leads her to be put in charge of cleaning the Abcurse brothers' rooms.  They're feared by all at the academy.  She doesn't fear them but does lust after them.  Will she be able to make it out alive?

This is not your standard romance.  Which in and of itself isn't bad but it wasn't what I was expecting.  There is literally no romance in this book or anything else you would expect in a romance.  There are hints that it is coming but it didn't happen in this book.  The interplay between Willa and the Abcurse brothers was amusing.  It almost seemed like she has a death wish for the lack of fearing people she should fear.  I don't know if I necessarily liked the book but I did pick up the next one to read because I need to see how this series plays out.

This was a very cute story about a small town girl finding love with a movie star.  It was super cute story.  A little bit fast on the I love yous but the scenes were hot and heavy.  I liked how most of it played out.  The only part I wasn't in love with was who the shooter was.  It was kind of an afterthought and didn't feel very completed.  It was supposed to be what brought them together and yet it didn't feel like it was a completed story arc.  I still enjoyed the story and was happy they both got what they wanted so good addition to the series.

I did not want to put this audio down.  Training be damned.  I wanted to see how Ada and Loch worked out and got out of all the messes they found themselves in.  There were some major hot scenes and some sweet scenes.  I do think there was one too many kidnapping scenes but otherwise I enjoyed this book.  This book is part of a trilogy with Ada's sisters finding their happy ending.  I am very interested in finding out how those books turn out.

I wanted to like Anabelle and Hayden's story more than I did.  I just never got past Hayden abandoning his entire life and expecting everything to be perfect when he turns up YEARS later.  It was well written and I know some people loved the story.  I had a very hard time getting beyond him letting his family think he committed suicide so he could go deep undercover.  I liked Anabelle but even after finishing the book I still don't understand why her brother has so much hate for her.  Overall, it was an ok book.

I loved this book.  Harlow has the hots for her temporary boss but refuses to cave because she is a professional.  That is until her life is threatened and HE refuses to back off.  I loved seeing the struggle she had accepting his help.  She didn't want to be one of many who took from him.  Which made it that much sweeter when she did.  The only big negative I had was towards the end and she ends up kidnapped.  I kind of rolled my eyes a bit at that part just because it was a bit contrived.  It was minor enough that it didn't knock the score down.  Excellent addition to the series.

All I want for Christmas is a Cowboy by Jessica Clare

Eli plans on spending Christmas on the ranch by himself.  As a child of the system he doesn't have any family he wants to go see so he would rather let his coworkers go home and spend the holidays with family while he takes care of the animals.  While out rescuing a lost cow in a blizzard he finds a car had gone off the road.  Inside was a gorgeous woman, Cassandra, knocked out.  After getting her back to the house and she finally wakes up he's surprised to find she doesn't remember who she is.  As they get closer will the return of her memory keep them apart?

I love Jessica Clare's writing but this book was a miss for me.  Eli and Cassandra were just ok characters.  The issue I had was Cassandra had amnesia from her car accident.  They hook up without thinking about what would happen if she's in a relationship.  When she finally gets her memory back she leaves without really talking to Eli.  Just I remember and now I need to leave.  It was ridiculous.  This ends up hurting both of them.  She will eventually come back for their happy ending but it just didn't work for me.

Back in the Burbs by Tracy Wolff and Avery Flynn

3.5 Star

Mallory is having a run of very bad luck.  She caught her husband with another woman which led to her losing her job and her home and worst of all her great aunt died.  With the death of her aunt she inherits her home and a cranky HOA who wants the house cleaned up yesterday.  When she moves in against her parents wishes to get her life on track she finds a daunting task of things to do.  These tasks are not helped by the hot but cranky neighbor next door.  He pushes all of her buttons.  Will she find her backbone and possible love?

The Book was ok.  My biggest problem with it was how wishy washy the Mallory was.  Every time there was some conflict she would just roll over and take it.  When she finally gets a backbone it's for the wrong reasons.  There were times I really enjoyed the book and those were what kept me reading.  I loved Nick.  He was a grouchy man but amazing.  The more you learn about him the more you respect him.  Even after Mallory was an ass to him, he forgave her with no issue.  One of the biggest misses for me was the storyline with the ex-husband.  It literally just mentions in passing what happened but in no amount of detail.  He was screwing her over and she finally fought him and I wanted the details.  Overall, it was just ok.  Not the worst book I read this week nor the best.  Will I pick up again probably not.  There are way better books by Avery Flynn to read.
