Barbarian by Anna Hackett

3.5 Star

Nero Krahn is brooding warrior that House of Galen uses as their hunter and tracker.  When they rescue Winter they are still missing two other women from earth.  Nero just wants to keep Winter safe and secure within the House of Galen Compound.  However, she refuses to not be involved in looking for the women even though she is blind.

This book was more about finding the other women and not the romance between Nero and Winter.  I also got a little tired of Nero telling Winter what she could and couldn’t do.  I get that he was trying to protect her but if he had worked with her some of the issues would have never been a problem.  The book was also a little to close in storyline as the last book.  Overall, it was an ok book and I am hopeful the next book will be better.

Space Marine Blaine Strong has been rescued from the alien slavers but is on a mission to rescue the women the slavers still have.  He’s adjusting to his new life on Cathargo and trying to get back to the man he was before the slavers and the drugs they pumped him full.  Saff Essikani has been trained from a young age to fight using her abilities to anticipate what moves are coming her way.  She will need to help Blaine through all of the changes and try to rescue the women still held captive.

I enjoyed the story with these two.  All of the other books have been the female as the human and this one is the reverse.  It was interesting to see how much all of the humans were in the same boat but with some slight changes.  Saff was incredibly strong on her own and when she and Blaine got together, she was even stronger.  Relationship wise this one wasn’t as strong in the storyline as in the other four books.  The focus of this book was more on the slavers and rescuing the other women.  Overall, a good addition to the series.

"Helena Hunting takes your breath and your heart with equal force in this incredible, important novel. This book is a hug and a lesson, as well as a hell of a ride" -- Debra Anastasia, author

From New York Times bestselling author Helena Hunting writing as H. Hunting, comes a beautifully written and emotional new adult romance, Little Lies, November 16th and we have the first peek inside this unforgettable romance.

Sneak Peek

Lavender finally looks my way. “You can go back to your bunnies, Kodiak. I don’t need a bodyguard or a babysitter.”
Clarke laughs and smirks at me. “You heard her. We’re good.” He slings his arm over her shoulder and pulls her into his side. I’m pretty sure her ass cheek is pressed up against his leg, and his fingers dangle perilously close to her boob.
My control slips. The frustration over not being able to have what I want is wearing me down. Everyone has an opinion on what’s good for me—how I have to manage all the impulses, how I can’t let the obsessions rule me the way they often do. But this is more than I can take. It’s been weeks and weeks of fighting the need of being an asshole because the alternative is to dive right back into that fixation—and if I do, I’m very worried it’s going to consume me. And her.

Synopsis

I don’t want you.
You mean nothing to me.
I never loved you.
I turned my words into swords.
And I cut her down.
Shoved the blade in and watched her fall.
I said I’d never hurt her, and I did.
Years later, I’m faced with all the little lies, the untruths, the false realities, the damage I inflicted, when all I wanted was to indulge my obsession.
Lavender Waters is the princess in the tower. Even her name is the thing fairy tales are made of.
I used to be the one who saved her.
Over and over again.
But I don’t want to save her anymore.
I just want to pretend the lies are still the truth.

Shopping for the CEO’s Baby by Julia Kent

4 Star

Andrew and Amanda are about to be parents to not one but two babies.  This means that he is beating his brother in the kid department.  Declan only has one and Andrew is getting two.  Life is changing.  Concessions will need to be made because there will be two babies that need Andrew.  Amanda need Andrew to give her the comfort and attention since pregnancy is hard.  How will the workaholic deal with the life changes heading his way?

I was surprised by this book.  I love the books with Declan and Shannon but tend to not enjoy Andrew and Amanda as much.  Usually these two irritate me so much that it just isn’t enjoyable, and I don’t reread them.  This book was a complete surprise and I actually really enjoyed it.  There was a lot of growth with Andrew and his family which was awesome to see him finally growing.  One of my issues was the competition between the brothers and by the last book I was done with it.  Grow up already was something I said and in this book he did.  There were still moments where there was some competing, but it was more good natured and frustrated me way less.  I really liked seeing all of it progress and the relationships grow and change to include kids.  This was a good addition to the series.

A Bad Day for Sunshine by Darynda Jones

2.5 Star

Sheriff Sunshine Vicram didn’t run for office but here she is elected as sheriff of her hometown.  Moving her daughter Auri home with her parents she doesn’t expect anything special for her first day.  Instead of an easy day there is a delivery of muffins that prophesies trouble to come.  A girl has gone missing and she will need to find her before it’s too late.  Secrets will come out.

This book was so incredibly slow.  I had the hardest time getting into it and I gave it way more chance than I normally would have because her other books are so amazing.  I tried listening to the audio but found myself confused by the POV.  The book switches between Sun and Auri and at times I couldn’t figure out whether we were with Sun or Auri.  Even reading the book there were times I had to reread sections to figure out who was talking.  There was no suspense for the main plot point of the missing teen.  Everyone seemed to be walking around with no clue what was going on and it never really got better.  Who took the girl was just kind of revealed and who it was should have been a suspect at the beginning when the parents were interviewed.  I also had issues with the subplot of who Auri’s father was.  When all was said and done, they didn’t really wrap anything up in the story.  All of it is left dangling for the next book.  There are enough hints that you can guess some of the answers, but it just was so freaking frustrating.

From Ashes by Elise Faber

4 Star

After Gabby was rescued she isn’t sure if they will let her stay if they knew her secret.  She tries to stay under the radar and away from others to protect them.  Mason has been widowed forever and hasn’t been interested in anyone since the death of his wife and son until Gabby.  Will they be able to work through their issues to find their happy ending?

This is a pretty good story.  The biggest issue I had was it says it is book 1 but it didn’t feel like book 1.  There were a lot of things that didn’t make sense because it was reference the original series this book is a spinoff of.  If I had read all of those it probably would have made more sense.  That goes for the world building as well.  I still have questions about the world and since I enjoyed this one I will be checking out the other series.  I also didn’t understand why Gabby felt her big bad dark secret was that bad.  It wasn’t and it didn’t help the story along to have this big bad attitude about it.  I enjoyed the relationship between Gabby and Mason.  They struggled with their pasts and tried to find a way to make their relationship work and work through their pain.  This was why a 4 star review.  I enjoyed how it was written and the struggle the two had to come together made it worth all the other issues.

Bad Engagement by Elise Faber

3.5 Star

Kate McLeod is tired of everyone trying to set her up with men since she is the last McLeod unmarried.  When her mother tries to set her up and won’t take no for an answer she blurts out that she’s engaged.  With that statement she now needs to find a man to fill the role.  She’s lusted after Jaime as the hot vet now to get him to agree to be her fake fiancé.

I enjoyed this story though as I read it I could have sworn I’ve read this book before by a different author but it was just so similar.  There were parts that frustrated me like why fiancé and not boyfriend.  I liked Kate and Jaime but felt like there needed more backstory.  It is part of series and I haven’t read all of them so the backstory could be there I just haven’t read.  I am also confused why this is billionaire’s club as there was no billionaires.  I also felt the conflict between them was so contrived.  If she was that upset she should have confronted him instead of ignoring him.  It was very childish.  Overall I enjoyed the book just little things bothered me.

Shielding Aspen by Susan Stoker

4 Star

Aspen wanted a man he went on a couple of dates with to leave her alone.  She has asked and justified why they won’t work but he won’t take no for an answer.  After yet another spurned advance she walks up to a man in a bar and kissed him.  Using this random man to deter the guy she ends up with another soldier.  However, this one is a good one.  Brain has never had much luck with women.  He was too smart and too awkward.  When a random woman kisses him in a bar, he is enthralled with her.  When their relationship continues to deepen the could have been was not happy and was determined to make her and everyone else’s life miserable.

I enjoyed this book for the most part.  I didn’t really feel like the bad guy was really a bad guy.  It was more relationship book than here is this big bad guy that they will need to be rescued from.  I really liked Aspen’s character.  She was struggling with who she was and whether she should stay in the Army.  Brain frustrated me.  He was very smart but very stupid man.  Aspen made him a better person.  The ending literally sets up the rest of the books in the series and now I have to wait an indeterminate time to get all of them.  I really need to stop reading that last couple of pages of her books to not torture me with the wait.

Before you Ghost by Helena Hunting and Debra Anastasia

3 Stars

Evan had the most interesting demise.  He was having the best make up sex with his girlfriend Sammi when he went flying off the cliff and died.  Sammi can’t really believe what happened as he’s still sitting next to her cracking jokes while the police are explaining the next couple of steps will be.  How is Sammi supposed to handle Evan being a ghost and another ghost out to get her?

This story had an interesting premise and it was written by two authors I enjoy reading.  The writing was good and there was a fair bit of humor.  You will need to suspend your mind a bit for the sex scenes between a living breathing person and a ghost.  Ultimately the book was ok but there isn’t really a happily ever after since Evan stays a ghost and Sammi stays alive.  They just get physical time together when a medium type person helps them out.

Storm Called by Susan Copperfield

3 Star

Patrick Laycal was working as a dishwasher when the Royals decide to eat there.  Patrick’s boss ropes him into cooking the foods for them and then fires him.  He finds a job almost immediately cooking for some elites.  He keeps coming home to Princess Jessica in his house.  He feeds her and she keeps coming back.  When food poisoning sweeps through Dallas, Patrick tracks down what is causing it to keep Jessica safe.  Jessica is determined to piss off all the members of congress by not being a baby factory to give them the male heir they want.  She wants Patrick and she will have him.

This is marked as book one but it came out well after the series was established and is a prequel.  I very much wanted to love this story as I love Jessica and Pat in Null and Void.  However, as I’ve said with other books by Susan Copperfield there are so many scenes that can be cut out and have a more cohesive and better book.  I don’t know if the author doesn’t want to cut or people are just being yes men to her but she needs to edit her books.  You don’t need to have every minute detail left in the book to have a good book.  You have to have a book that makes sense throughout.  I liked seeing how Jessica and Pat got together but it seemed like the only reason they get together was because he cooks for her and it would horrify her parents.  There didn’t seem like any other connection.  If you cut out all the drivel it was nice to see what lead to their marriage.

Cold Flame by Susan Copperfield

3.5 Star

Rachel of the New York Royal family has run away from her life.  She’s tired of how her family treats her and wanting freedom from the expectations.  She sneaks into the Royal States of California as a refugee.  If she can make it through the probationary period she can become a citizen.  After almost five years of being there and moving every couple of months she gets a job at the archives working for the royals.  She meets her lusty prince she’s been craving for years.  Ethan has been wanting Rachel for years and has bided his time until he could have her.  When her parents put out a live bounty on her he makes his move to get and keep her.

There were so many parts of this book that could have been cut out and made for a better story.  There were pages upon pages of conversation about her pet rats that didn’t need to be in the story.  There was a lot of telling what happened and not showing.  Prime example was Rachel’s parents come to California to get her and end up dying to stop a wildfire.  Rachel never gets any closer or sees her parents because they do this with no witnesses.  Susan Copperfield also does a lot of insta.  She then plays it off as empaths and leechs who have to be with each other.  Like everyone seems to be empaths and leechs in these books.  It gets old that the couple never really have any meaningful conversations before they get together.  There are a lot of conversations of I’m obsessed with you let’s get married.  That doesn’t equal a good marriage.  The story just kind of fizzled out for me.

The Troubleshooter by Anna Hackett

4 Star

Gia has three very over protective brothers and their friend Saxon.  She gives her whole heart to those she cares about even when it shouldn’t be.  One of her friends Willow is in trouble and that trouble ends up falling on Gia.  When her brothers and Saxon found out what was going on they were determined to keep her safe.  Saxon will have to keep his hands to himself because he shouldn’t want his best friends little sister.  Gia has had a crush on him since she first met him.  The biggest problem is he’s very demanding and orders her to do what he wants.  She refuses to follow any orders or to listen to her brothers.  When they can no longer ignore the sparks what will they be able to work together to get the bad guys off Gia.

I really enjoyed this book.  The struggle between Gia and Saxon was fun to see.  I did get frustrated with Gia over her belief that Willow couldn’t be doing anything bad on purpose even though everything was pointing to that.  I really wish she had clicked to that sooner because by the time she did it was way later than she should have.  One of my favorite scenes in the book was Gia telling Saxon’s parents off.  Another one was Gia saving herself and letting the guys come in and basically be the clean-up.  Loved seeing team 52 in here as well.  Good addition to the series and I can’t wait to see what the next book brings.

Bonds by Susan Copperfield

3.5 Star

Jack Alders works for Search and Rescue using his waveweaving talent when an oil tanker crashes off the coast of France he overextends his magic.  To keep him from dying France flies in a doctor who brings him back from the brink.  With Melody’s magic she may have magically connected to Jack so he is required to go home with her.  The more time they spend together the more they want to be together.  It doesn’t help when forces keep trying to kill her.

I really enjoyed reading this book for the most part and it had ok flow.  There were some parts that should have been cut out to make a more cohesive story but it wasn’t bad.  I also felt the bad guys were kind of an afterthought in the end.  There was a lot of build up to people who wanted to harm Melody and her family but the people who are causing all the problems are never in the book.  They are only ever talked about.  There was also talk about Jack’s past and that was never followed through on.  There just ended up being a lot of loose threads that never really got resolved once Melody and Jack got together.

Huntress by Susan Copperfield

4 Star

Prince Kelvin is the heir to the Illinois throne and needs to find love to break the family curse.  The problem is he hasn’t found someone he likes.  His mother wants him to take back his ex but as she cheated, he wants nothing to do with her.  With his last animal shift, he had a run in with a hunter who intrigues him, and he is willing to entice her to come and train with him to see if she’s his match.  Evangeline is fine with that if she can beat on him to keep him in line.  When he lets the family know his intentions, they don’t take it well.  In the process they end up breaking her arm and that is one thing too many for Kelvin and he abdicates.  How will the family get him back and in his good graces?

I enjoyed this story.  There was some meandering through parts of the story that was frustrating, but it wasn’t as bad as it was in the last book.  Personally, for me if my parents did what they did to him we would be done as there isn’t a lot of ways you come back from it.  Kelvin’s Great Grandpa who did the breaking of the bone did make up for it, but his parents never really did anything to make up for the way they acted.  This bothered me so very much.  I enjoyed who the bad guys were and how they were caught.  It would have been nice to see what happened to them in this book but maybe it will be addressed in a later book. Overall, it was a pretty good book and was right in line with Null and Void.

3 Star

Adam had once been engaged to Veronica the heir of North Dakota.  He was stripped of his rank and familial connections and cast out.  18 years later he’s made himself into a new man.  He is surprised by the arrival of Veronica’s brother.  He has dire news and only Adam can save the rest of the family from the fall of the kingdom.

The beginning of the book was pretty good.  I liked the set up and it was moving along nicely and then it got bogged down with the details.  There was a lot of redundancy in the story that could have been cut out and would have made a better story.  The book needed to have a good editor to make a better book.

Captive King by Susan Copperfield

3 Star

Summer Cassidy is ordered to sell a precious necklace to bring some much-needed funds into the university’s archeology dig.  She meets bachelor 103 at the Texas Charity Auction.  He takes a liking to her and bids 10 million for it.  She bids 5.25 for his coffee cups and a coffee date.  One short night together has them hooked but she’s expected back at the dig.  On her way there she is stopped at a sister dig site where she ends up transporting to another and another and another.  How will they break the curse?

I wanted to like this book so much more than I did.  It started off really good.  I wanted to see how Cassidy and Landon would work out.  It just felt like it went off on a tangent about rape about 3/4 of the way through the book.  It just kind of threw me because that wasn’t where the book was going from the beginning of the book.  It felt like there were two plot points the author wanted to do and couldn’t decide which way she wanted to go so threw them both in.   The first book Null and Void that I reviewed previously had hot topic that was addressed.  When it was addressed in that book it made sense where this book it just didn’t meld with the rest of the story.  The other issue I had was how the culture in Alaska was handled.  There seems to be a massive rape culture where women are free to do with as you wish.  Landon who is King doesn’t seem to take any responsibility for this happening right under his nose.  Like you need your lady love to point it out to you and champion the other women in the kingdom.  The other issue I had were things left unanswered about some shady behavior from Cassidy’s school.  Like you wouldn’t bring hell down on their heads since you now have way more power.

Unlikable Demon Hunter by Deborah Wilde

5 Star

Nava Katz is a smart-ass and is a hot mess.  Her twin brother Ari is the responsible one and is supposed to join the Brotherhood of David to hunt demons.  On the night of his induction she shows up half-drunk and accidentally takes her brothers place with the Brotherhood.  She is required to go through the training her brother had already started and deal with men who don’t want her around as there has never been a woman in the group.  One of her trainers Rohan is everything she ever wanted but can’t have.  After killing some half demons, she will have a fight on her hands.

I really enjoyed this book.  It was different from other books I’ve read.  I really like Nava’s character.  She’s flawed in so many ways, but she has her reasons for those flaws.  Deborah Wilde writing in this book draws the reader in and made me want to see how it would work out.  She is able to build these relationships between the characters that are complex, and she does it in a short amount of time.  The world building, she does in the book is also really well done.  I am very interested in seeing where this series is going.

Audiobook:

This book is narrated by Hollie Jackson and she does an amazing job narrating it.  She is able to give each character their own voices, so you know who is talking.  The pacing in the book is spot on even with me listening to it at a faster speed.  I love listening to any book she narrates.

Bring the Heat by G.A. Aiken

3 Star

Bronwen the awful is ordered to help Keita on her mission with some of the Mi-runach.  They are to try and find Ren before his mother finds out and starts a war.  Aiden is loving the fact that he gets to spend more time with Bronwen even if she doesn’t want anything to do with him.  The group have to dodge the Zealots, who follow the god Chramnesind and it isn’t working out well for them.  What will they do when they find out Ren was killed and Keita loses it.

The romance took the backseat again in this book.  It also seemed the book was more about all the other characters.  The best part of the book was when Annwyl was stuck in Hell and had to fight her way out.  She gets out just in time to help all of the people of her realm defeat the bad guys. I loved this storyline.  I also enjoyed the parts with Keita.  She is out for revenge over the murder of her friend Ren and I loved how this worked out. If the book was about these two storylines it would have been a pretty good book.  However, the book was supposed to be about Bronwen and Aiden.  There wasn’t enough time with this couple to feel a connection with them and since that is what the book is touted as it was a bit disappointing.

The Rookie by Kimberly Kincaid

4 Star

A.D.A. Tara Kingston is trying to get justice by taking a major criminal off the streets when her CI is attacked.  The responding officer, Xander Matthews, has wanted her for the last two years since she tried to prosecute him.  He’s cleaned up his life and joined the force. They will work together with the Intelligence Unit to keep the CI safe and get a conviction.

As I read this book, I felt it was a part of another series even though it said book one.  When I looked into this it is a spinoff of two other series by Kimberly Kincaid.  It wasn’t anything major that took away from the book overall but some of the plot would have made more sense if I had read the other two series.  I enjoyed the story even with this confusion.  I liked the couple a lot.  They really worked well together.  I also enjoyed the mystery of who was going after the CI.  I look forward to reading the next book in the series as well as going back and reading the other two series.

Keeping Track of Your Books

Here's a different kind of post for today.  After seeing in several book groups people asking for suggestions on the best way to catalog their collections I wanted to know what all was available.  In my professional life I’m a librarian.  I’ve used many different kinds of software to catalog library material throughout my career.  I’m always looking for something to use in my personal life.  With over 12,000 books and even more DVDs, CDs, and Videogames I want something similar to what I’ve used at work without the price tag.  Forever ago I started using LibraryThing and Goodreads but every so often I look into seeing if there’s better options available.  Here is what I’ve found and hope this will help other bibliophiles out there looking to organize their books and other media.

Book Catalogue – This is an open source app to catalog your books.   You can sort by author or title.  You can also update your list by ISBN or by scanning the barcode.  You can create multiple bookshelves for you books so if you like to separate some of your books out you can.

Book Crawler – The only information I have for this is from online as I don’t have an Apple product to test it out.  It looks like it has a lot of things that are awesome and gets some pretty good reviews.  However, it does look like you will hit a limit for the number of books until you will need to pay for the app.  Nowhere does it say how many or if it is a one time charge.

Collectorz – This is an interesting site.  You have to pick between Movies, Books, Music, Comics, and Games.  Each require their own subscription service.  The subscription service ranges from $14.95 up to $29.95 a year and you can pick which works best for you.  You do get what you pay for and the app itself looks amazing. It also looks very similar to what a library would use to catalog their books.  The downside is I want to be able to catalog all my books, movies, music, and everything else together without paying individually for them.

Delicious Library 3 – This is another Apple only app.  This has several ways to customize your collection.  It says it is unlimited and they will give you a trial run with the app.  However, you will have to pay eventually.  It looks like the creators are the only people you can ask for help and it does look like they are answering questions so bonus.  The one downside is that it is app only and not allowed on the web.

GoodReads – I’ve used this site for a little over 10 years. I like it to track what I’m reading or listening too.  But as a way to track what I own it doesn’t work for me.  The app is just like the website and they are both easy to use.  There is a way to store your whole library with them but you can only add your books to it.  I want something I can add everything too and track which format I have it in. You can add different shelves and tags but those add up really fast.  Plus they have sooooo many ads and particularly on the app it can hinder my use of it.  They do have some interesting statistics for what you’ve read and they do break it down by pages, publication year, and overtime your reading stats.

Libib – I started to create a library with this company as the app looked amazing.  The biggest downside for me was the max collection for the free version is 5000.  If I just wanted to catalog my physical books this would work for me for a short time.  However, as I have a book collection that is well over 10,000 and I am not willing to pay for a catalog this site was out for me.  Once you throw in DVDs, CDs, and games it just wouldn’t work for me.  If I wanted to pay for the pro edition it would be about $100 a year.  This isn’t that expensive and would be a good option for a small library.  It looks like it is more for managing your collection and not anything else like reviewing.  If you have a small collection or want to pay the app does make this a better option as the app was very user friendly.

Library Thing – I’ve used this site forever and I love most things about it.  The one thing I am not a fan of is the app.  The app is very basic and it is awesome to have my collection at my fingertips to not buy duplicates.  However, anytime you add anything it is so complicated to update tags that it is easier to just use the computer to add items to the collection.  They allow you to add your own barcodes to your items.  And they do have a cute little cat barcode scanner.  Overall, this site has everything I need and want with the most versatility to do things with the items in my collection.  I do check out other sites when I find them since the app is so bad that if I found a site that allowed me to do everything I want and had a better app I would switch in a heartbeat.

Litsy – Looks like it is a really good site to use to track your reviews, blurbs, and saving your favorite quote.  You can import your records from Goodreads.  When I tried it, it didn’t go so well.  It wasn’t the whole of my collection but just the books I’ve read and there is slightly more than 2000 books that imported and another 600 that wouldn’t load for whatever reason.  Once the books are in the system there is no way to organize them to easily find something.  When you get to the thousands of books and are trying to find a specific book your best option is to search for it.  At that point you can add your opinion.  Overall, I probably won’t be using this again as I already have a site that does everything this one does better.

I am sure there are a ton more sites and apps that can used.  There are some sites and apps that are better at tracking your read list with reviews and others that are better at organizing your collection.  Which works for you?
