Hard Line by Pamela Clare

4 Stars

Dr. Samantha Park’s living on and working on the South Pole.  This is supposed to be her second year working there and she was planning on it being just as good as the first year until the death of her roommate.  She is still trying to come to grips with the loss when three men from Cobra International Security arrive to find a downed satellite containing military secrets.  Thor is planning on a mission that will be in and out but things go awry almost immediately.  He also can’t get Samantha out of his head.  They will need to work together to discover who brought the satellite down and murdered Samantha’s friend.

I started with this book and absolutely loved it.  It was interesting to see how things are handled at the South Pole.  I really liked Samantha and Thor together.  They were an interesting couple who led lives that were not going to be on the same continent but by the end it seemed that would work out for them.  It was a really fast read and it made me want to go and read the rest of the series.

She was going to get herself engaged.

And she had just the perfect guy in mind.

Bad Engagement by Elise Faber releases on October 12th!

Kate McLeod was desperate.

Her younger sister was having her first baby, her younger brother was recently married, and . . . Christmas was coming.

And in the McLeod household, Christmas was everything. Every year her parents’ house looked like an assembly of angels had puked everywhere. She was talking lights and glitter, garland and plaid. EVERYWHERE. All of that Christmas spirit was topped off with the annual McLeod Holiday Party, complete with mistletoe and happy couples and . . . her lonesome single ass. Kate, the one everyone tried to set up with their friend or cousin or coworker. Kate, the oldest and pathetically unmarried sister. Kate, the sad, single San Franciscan.

Well, this year she had a plan.

She was going to get herself engaged.

A diamond ring on her finger was the perfect way to get her family to back off.

And she had just the perfect guy in mind.

Crowne Rules by CD Reiss

4 Stars

Mandy Bettencourt is in dire need of a break from the public.  Her best friend offers up the family cabin to get out of the media spotlight.  What the friend didn’t know was her brother in law also was in need of the cabin.  Dante Crowne was desperate for some time away to sort through boxes of legal documents when he finds out there is a very unwelcome guest.  He will do anything to drive her away while she will do anything he says except leave.

This was an interesting story with overtones of BDSM.  There were times the characters were not always the best people but overall you rooted for them to be successful.  I really wanted to see Mandy’s ex get his comeuppance.  This is part of a series sort of.  There seems to be books for the other Crowne brothers.  I haven’t read them and enjoyed this book.

Securing Kalee by Susan Stoker

3 Stars

Kalee Solberg was taken by rebel forces 6 months ago.  She’s had to live through some of the worst things to survive.  She feels there is no out and she will die eventually.  Forest “Phantom” Dalton feels like they failed their mission when they didn’t bring Kalee back with Piper.  He’s livid when his superiors refuse to let him go in and get her out.  He takes a vacation and goes against orders to pull her out.  Without any one the wiser she is pulled out and taken back to the states where she can begin healing.

I wanted to like this book more than I did.  It was a well written story and I loved the characters in it.  I loved the introduction of new teams that will have their own stories next year.  There were also old characters that were back as well which was nice to see.  The reason for the rating I gave it was the reality of what Kalee faced and how it was handled.  Literally within 2 weeks (? maybe 1 week) she is lusting after Phantom and wants him.  They start a sexual relationship way sooner than I would think a rape victim would be willing to start and it just bothered me how it was handled.  I also didn’t see the point to him having a stalker.  It didn’t add anything to the story at all.  As I was writing this review I had completely forgotten about this aspect of the book.  If those scenes had been removed from the book it wouldn’t have mattered at all.  Other than these two parts of the story it was a really well written book and was a really good way to conclude the series.  I loved seeing how the Navy handled his actions.

Securing Avery by Susan Stoker

5 Stars

Navy Nurse Avery Nelson knew being deployed to Afghanistan would be dangerous but she never dreamed she would be taken hostage and held for weeks.  She’s not just going to lay there and take it.  When the SEAL she’s been flirting with for months shows up she’s never been happier.  Cole “Rex” Kingston has wanted Avery since he met her but didn’t know how to go about asking her out before she shipped out.  When he found out she had been taken he was willing to move heaven and earth to save her.  Even after getting her out of Afghanistan she still isn’t safe until they find the American soldier who was helping the terrorist.  Heading state side she will need to confront her fears and PTSD with the help of Rex.

I LOVED this story.  There was a lot of action in the rescue.  Even when they hit the states there was still action.  It was also interesting to see how PTSD was handled with Avery.  I found who the bad guys were and why they did what they did to be interesting.  I also loved how Avery did everything she could to save herself both times she is in danger.  Excellent book.

Securing Zoey by Susan Stoker

4 Stars

Zoey Knight had a nomads childhood until she landed in Juneau, Alaska.  As an adult she has remained there, occasionally she thirsts for an adventure.  Be careful what you wish for because while on the way home her plain goes down in the middle of no man’s land Alaska.  Lucky for her she’s on the plain with Navy SEAL Mark “Bubba” Wright.  He’s on his way home for his father’s funeral when he runs into the girl he knew from high school.  Once they are rescued they need to figure out who paid for their plain to go down to stay safe.

This was a little bit different from Susan Stoker’s normal books.  It wasn’t combat or terrorist related it was something else entirely.  It would be a major spoiler if I told you what it was about but it was different from her other books.  I enjoyed it a lot.  Seeing how they managed to survive in the Alaskan wilderness with almost nothing.  I also liked seeing Zoey and Bubba come together.  Good addition to her series.

Securing Piper by Susan Stoker

5 Stars

Piper Johnson was visiting her friend in the peace corp when a coup happens and the orphanage they are at is taken over.  Piper is hidden with 3 orphans when the SEAL team comes in to rescue Piper’s friend.  They will need to navigate their way through the jungle to the city.  Beckett “Ace” Morgan thought it would be an easy in and out until Piper won’t leave the kids behind.  On the mad dash to the city he falls for her.  When they get to the city they will have to decide what to do with the kids and how they will all get out safe.

I loved this book.  The only part that didn’t really work for me was the bad guy.  He wasn’t really a bad guy to me.  Plus the rest of the story was just that much better without adding in that aspect to the story.  There is one thing that is spoiler esq. They were there to rescue Kalee and find her dead.  Halfway through the book I knew she wasn’t dead and there would definitely be a book with her.  This was one of her better books I’ve read by Susan Stoker and it totally makes up for the last book.

Securing Sidney by Susan Stoker

3 Stars

Sidney Hale loves dogs and can’t stand seeing them abused.  She is willing to go to any means necessary to save a dog from a bad owner.  Decker comes across her when she is fighting with a man known for using dogs in a dog fighting scheme.  He helps her save the dog from abuse and falls hard for her.

I had a really hard time with this book.  It was a really good book up until the end when the heroine does something that makes her too stupid to live.  Up until this point I really enjoyed the book and would have reviewed it much higher but at that point it was a no go for me.  I understand why the author did what she did but it just didn’t work for me at all.  It was a one off bad book for me and it doesn’t stop me from reading the rest of the series but it probably won’t be one I reread.

Securing Brenae by Susan Stoker

I missed a post yesterday due to a migraine enjoy a second review today.

4 Stars

Rear Admiral Dag Creasy has had a long successful career in the Navy.  It hasn’t always been easy but his wife Brenae has stuck by him for 30 years.  They love each other more than words.  When their house needs some work they move in to temporary housing.

This was a really cute short story.  Sometimes short stories don’t work well with existing series but this one did.  It had a full plot and no cliff hanger ending.  It was interesting to see more with Dag since the ending of the last book.  It was a really good addition to the series.

Book 1.5 SEAL of Protection: Legacy Series

Securing Caite by Susan Stoker

4 Stars

Caite McCallan works for the Department of Defense in Bahrain.  A glitch with the elevator leads to an invitation to dinner with Navy SEAL Rocco.  He misses there dinner and she believes he blew her off until she over hears a conversation that indicates he and some of the other SEALs are in danger.  Caite puts her life in danger to go and make sure they are safe.  Rocco is shocked when he and his team are rescued by the shy woman who he was interested in.  When the people who captured the SEALs turn their sights on Caite she turns to Rocco for help.

I really enjoyed this story.  The pacing was spot on.  Loved the fact that Caite rescues the SEALs and is hesitant to accept help from them in return when she is in danger because of the help.  It was interesting to seeing the older SEALs working with the younger ones.  I also adored the ending of this book.  Can’t wait to see where this series goes.

Updated Shadows and Surrender by Deborah Wilde

An updated review.  I recently listened to the audiobook of this story and I loved it.  I know I like Hollie Jackson as a narrator but I forget how much until I listen to another book she narrates.  In this book you know exactly which character is speaking because she changes the tone or accent and you just know it is this character.  There is no guessing about who is talking.  Hollie Jackson brings this story to life and enhances the overall book.  The book was awesome and Hollie Jackson made it even better.

5 Stars

When a murder scene leads to Ash’s past she is determined to investigate the murder.  Trying to be a team player she brings Levi in.  They discover more information about her father what they discover will close some wounds but open more.  Levi also asks for her help with his ex-girlfriend.  The paths merge will Levi and Ash be able to survive what is coming?

I loved this story.  I should have waited until the fourth and final book was out so I wouldn’t have to sit here waiting for October.  The story ends cliffhanger esc but completes the story that was started at the beginning.  The ending was WOW and it leads into the next book in a good way but bad if you don’t have the patience to wait.  There wasn’t any part of this story that felt like it lagged.  It was a really good addition to the series.  It answered some questions that had been raised previously and throws some new ones at you.  You see growth in the characters and the relationships.  Definitely worth checking out.

Hard Target by Pamela Clare

4 Stars

Derek Tower, owner of a private military group Cobra, is sent in when things get difficult.  When he receives a call from a Senator to go to Afghanistan and bring his daughter home no matter what he at first refuses.  However, the Senator uses blackmail to get him to agree to go.  He reluctantly heads over to talk with Jenna into giving up her midwife duties to go stateside.  What Derek doesn’t plan for is the attraction they have for each other or the lengths in which the Senator will go to get her home.

This is a spin off series off of the I-Team series.  I haven’t read this series and jumped in with a different book in this series.  When I finished that one I wanted to read the rest of them so I went back to the beginning.  You don’t have to have read I-Team to understand what is going on in this book.  Now that the explanation is out of the way on to my thoughts on the book.  I enjoyed it a lot.  It seemed pretty accurate on the front of what the expectations of women in Afghanistan are and the danger aid workers are in when they go over there.  I liked the couple for the most part but there were times when Jenna frustrated me.  There was some pretty good action in the book before they head back stateside.  The only real disappointment for me was the Senator didn’t get his comeuppance.  Will definitely be checking out the rest of the series.

Going Under by Skye Jordan

3.5 Stars

KT has always been fast and free since the death of her father.  When she caught in a cyclone with two other women they became best of friends.  Seven years later she is helping fix up Laiyla’s family business to sell.  She meets Dr. Delicious when she ends up in ER Christmas Eve for stitches.  She is all for hooking up but with 3 girls at home he isn’t interested in a hook up.  The more they see each other the more they want to be together.  Can KT get passed her need to be fast and free to join the family?

This story was ok.  I read all of it and there were parts I loved a lot but there were just as many I didn’t like.  I wasn’t a big fan of KT and I had issues with some of the decisions Ben made about their relationship.  The epilogue also didn’t ring true for how KT is and if you were going to have someone do a 180 in their life it should be something that is shown in the story.  There didn’t seem like the other two woman were in this as much as they were in the first one.  Which led to a disconnect with the overall story.  I also am curious if KT ended up selling her part of the resort or if they all stayed on and she just went gallivanting around the world.  I will be reading the last book just because I want to see how the series ends.

Shielding Kinley by Susan Stoker

5 Stars

Kinley has always felt like an outcast since her time in the foster system so when she connects with Delta Force member Gage “Lefty” Haskins she thinks it’s not going to work out.  She ghosts him after their first meeting.  When they meet a second time she swears she’s going to call him even though he lives in Texas and she in DC.  Instead she accidentally ghosts him a second time when her life falls apart after witnessing a high-powered state official with a murdered girl.  She is fired from her job and on her way home is shoved in front of a train which destroys her phone.  With no one to turn to she tracks Gage down for his help and advice.  The longer they’re together the greater their connection is but it puts his life in danger and Kinley will need to decide what is best for them.

I loved loved loved this story.  I was so mad and sad at one point in the book so many feelings.  Kinley makes the hardest decision in the world to protect those she loves and it’s months and months of waiting.  I loved the build up to this point and then I got very mad at the book and wanted to throw my device I was reading on.  It all works out in the end but the journey to the happily ever after was the best part.  I also enjoyed seeing characters from the other series in this book.  The set up for the next one was also nice to see and I now can’t wait for the book to come out.

Shielding Gillian by Susan Stoker

4 Stars

Event planner Gillian was heading home from a job in Costa Rica when their plane was hijacked by terrorists.  They are flown to Venezuela with demands.  They use her as a mouthpiece to get their needs met and kill any hostages when they don’t get their way.  Walker “Trigger” Nelson has his Delta Team called in to rescue the hostages.  A bond is formed between them and when they get back to Texas they both want to see where this is going.  Trigger hesitates to start something as he is concerned about her mental health until he is told there was a missed hijacker who was among the hostages and they’re blaming Gillian for the failed attack.

I enjoyed the story a lot.  I did figure out who the hijacker was almost from the beginning but this book never claimed to be a mystery.  The pacing was spot on and so was the romance.  It ties into other series by Susan Stoker so it can technically be read alone as the beginning of a new series but it is better to have read the previous series.  Overall, it was a good edition to the rest of her books.

The Investigator by Anna Hackett

5 Stars

Museum Curator Haven McKinley left Miami for a fresh start without men.  She has an amazing job at a museum, new friends, and no abusive ex.  Haven likes her new boss, has made friends with his sister and is trying to avoid one of the brothers who is too hot for his own good.  She was sticking to that until someone stole a priceless art piece from the museum.  Now Rhys is not letting her out of his sights and they both are having trouble keeping their hands to themselves.  They will need to work together to track down the missing painting and keep Haven safe.

I enjoyed this book a lot.  The pacing was spot on.  There was no lags in the story.  I never felt like the book needed to move on already though I did want to read it faster than I did just because I wanted to see how it would turn out.  I enjoyed seeing Rhys breakdown Haven’s walls.  I also enjoyed seeing Rhys realize it wasn’t a passing fancy that she was it for him.  He was a whole lot of alpha male and she pushed back on so much because she needed to be involved.  It was awesome to read.

Devil’s Assassin by Lia Davis and L.A. Boruff

3 Stars

Lilith has finally agreed to mate the devil.  Mostly so she won’t be helpless when there is a demon uprising.  Lucifer has been waiting forever for her to agree to be his mate. He isn’t sure her heart is in the right spot for it but isn’t willing to walk away from her either.  With the mating this will hopefully help defeat his brother and keep all those he loves safe.

After having read both of these books they could and should have been one book.  With a bit of editing it would have made a more cohesive story.  I actually liked this one better than the first one as there wasn’t has much back and forth on the timeline.  Lilith still frustrated me as she never seemed to learn and then always ended up in a situation that she wasn’t happy about being in.  Overall between the two stories it was an interesting take on the Devil as the hero.

Book 2 Lucifer’s War

Devil’s Consort by Lia Davis and L.A. Boruff

3 Stars

Lilith used to be human before Lucifer took her from the mortal realm and changed her.  She became the mother of all vampires.  She has fought her desires for the King of Hell for 100s of years.  To defeat a powerful enemy she will need to put aside her anger and embrace Lucifer or all could be lost.

This book ends in a cliffhanger ending and you will need to read the next book Assassin to finish the story.  While reading it I was a little bored.  There was too much backstory which slowed down the overall book.  It was also backstory that wasn’t pivotal to the overall story so it felt like filler.  I found myself skimming those chapters to get back to the main storyline.  My other issue with this story was Lilith.  She was just a whiner and a hot head and both caused major issues in the book because of that.  I know it was a plot point to move the story along but it was also annoying to constantly be going over the same argument instead of finding something new to move it along.  Honestly the only reason I read the second book was because I wanted to see how it would end.

Centered by Elise Faber

Centered (Gold Hockey Book 9) by [Elise Faber]

4 Stars

Liam Williamson’s family was legendary in the NHL.  He plays but doesn’t feel he’s meeting the same goals has the rest of the family did.  He’s been trade to four teams in four years and is wondering if hockey is where he is meant to be.  He figured his playing days are almost over until he met Mia.  Mia gets him out of his own head and enjoying life again.  Mia’s had a hard life.  She lives a minimalist’s life because of her dad until she saves Liam.  Now he’s turning her world upside down.

The book was pretty good.  I enjoyed the Liam and Mia’s relationship.  It didn’t feel like insta relationship.  It had a nice slow build.  I also really enjoyed the interplay between the two.  This is book 9 and I haven’t read the rest of the series and it was very much a stand-alone story.  There was an epilogue at the end that leads into the next book that sounds really good so it will be a series I go and read all of because it was that good.

Cloudy with a Chance of Witchcraft by Mandy M Roth

Cloudy with a Chance of Witchcraft: A Paranormal Women's Fiction Romance Novel (Grimm Cove Book 1)

4 Stars

Poppy thought everything in her life was good.  Her fraternal twins had just gone off to college, her business was solid, and she thought her marriage was strong.  Her husband asked for a divorce this leads her on a journey to where she grew up where she will meet up with old friends and her old sweetheart.  She will finally discover what happened that led to their break-up and maybe bring some happy back into her life.

I enjoyed this story and it didn’t seem as long as it was.  It looked at someone who was in their 40s starting over and going home with a paranormal kick.  I loved seeing Poppy pick herself up and figure out what she wanted.  I loved seeing Brett explain his reasons and trying to get in Poppy’s good graces again after being absent so long.  Even though they are mated within a 48 hours of seeing each other it doesn’t feel like insta love since they dated so long before.  Overall, if you’re looking for a light paranormal romance this is a really good book to read.

Audiobook:

Allyson Voller does a pretty good job with this book.  She does some different accents well.  The one issue and it was minor was the men’s voices were a little off.  It wasn’t anything major and it didn’t pull me out of the book but it did cause me to pause at one point.  Still worth a listen.

It should have been easy. Stay away from her boss’ hot brother.

Museum curator Haven McKinney has sworn off men. All of them. Totally. She’s recently escaped a bad ex and started a new life for herself in San Francisco. She loves her job at the Hutton Museum, likes her new boss, and has made best friends with his feisty sister. Haven’s also desperately trying not to notice their brother: hotshot investigator Rhys Norcross. And she’s really trying not to notice his muscular body, sexy tattoos, and charming smile.

Nope, Rhys is off limits.

Investigator Rhys Norcross is good at finding his targets. After leaving an elite military team, he thrives on his job at his brother’s security firm, Norcross Security. He’s had his eye on smart, sexy Haven for a while, but the pretty curator with her eyes full of secrets is proving far harder to chase down than he anticipated.

Luckily, Rhys never, ever gives up.

When thieves target the museum and steal a multi-million-dollar painting in a daring theft, Haven finds herself right in the middle of a deadly situation. With the painting gone and Haven in danger, Rhys vows to do whatever it takes to keep her safe, and Haven finds herself risking the one thing she was trying so hard to protect—her heart.

Note to readers: This is a sexy, fast-paced romance with a heroine in danger who’s sworn off men (and gets kidnapped…a lot) and a hot, tattooed former military hero (who looks fine in a suit and rolls his sleeves up showing off his ink).

Last Dragon Standing by G.A. Aiken

Last Dragon Standing (Dragon Kin series Book 4) by [G.A. Aiken]

3.5 Stars

Keita dragoness and youngest daughter of the Dragon Queen isn’t a fighter like the rest of the family.  Even though she isn’t a fighter she has her own talents.  Ragnar, Lightning Dragon from the Northern territories has a treaty with the Queen.  He HATES Keita.  She is a spoiled royal who is annoying.  When he finds out that she isn’t quite what she seems will he be able to woo her?

This was not one of my favorite books in the series.  Even knowing what Keita means to the thrown and she uses her act to get what she wants she still annoyed me so much.  Ragnar also wasn’t my favorite male lead in these books.  I did like seeing the progress the overall story with all of the characters from previous books.  The other reason I had issues with it was the middle part was a little slow for me.  Once it picked up the book was way better.

Audiobook:

I loved Hollie Jackson narrating this book.  She does an excellent job with each character.

With the paparazzi hot on her heels, Mandy Bettencourt is desperate for somewhere to hide, and her best friend has just the place.

It’s perfect. No Internet. No phone. A deep bathtub she’s soaking in when HE shows up. Her best friend’s brother, Dante Crowne. Rich as a cardinal sin and handsome enough to piss off the devil. A man with a reputation for unforgettable bedroom games.

Mandy got an early taste of them in high school--for seven minutes in a closet. She can tell you, the rumors are all true.

Dante knows he’s got a reputation for a lot of things, including a love of solitude. But there’s a beautiful socialite in his bathtub, and the memory of those seven minutes isn’t inspiring him to kick her out. So he offers her a deal. If she wants to stay, she has to work. If she makes a mistake, she’s corrected with pink hand marks on her backside.

That’s the deal. Beg for it or leave it.

He’s surprised when she gets on her knees, and he’s even more surprised when she likes the punishment. The most shocking thing, though, is how much he’s starting to like her.

They can’t stay in paradise forever. Los Angeles awaits. But an old nemesis sets his sights on tearing them apart, and Dante may be the one left begging.

About CD Reiss CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn't pick up she's at the well hauling buckets. Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master's degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels. She's frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn't ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood. If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

Dead Heat by Heather Graham

The Dead Heat of Summer: A Krewe of Hunters Novella by [Heather Graham]

4 Stars

Casey Nicholson has always been a bit sensitive to the supernatural but she’s never seen a ghost.  When she sees a ghost of recently dead woman she thinks she’s losing her mind.  However, Lena needs her help to keep her daughter and sister safe.  When Casey gives the warning to Lena’s sister she is visited by an FBI agent.  FBI Agent Ryder McKinley knew his cousin hadn’t committed suicide but didn’t know how to prove it.  When a mystery woman shows up and warns his cousin about a threat he wants to know what Casey knows.  Casey isn’t sure what she can say that won’t sound crazy so she tries to make up a reason until he can convince her what she’s experienced doesn’t make her crazy.  They will need to work together to keep everyone safe and find the killer.

I enjoyed this book a lot.  It was short and sweet and you don’t have to have read the other 32 plus short stories to read this one.  I have read some not all.  Some I’ve enjoyed a lot and others I’ve not enjoyed a lot so if you want a short and very complete story this is a good choice.  The only big issue would be the insta love that happens between Casey and Ryder.  You should definitely check it out.

Anti-boyfriend by Penelope Ward

The Anti-Boyfriend by [Penelope Ward, Jessica Royer Ocken ]

3.5 Stars

Having very thin walls makes life interesting for Carys and her manwhore next door neighbor.  When she finally tells him she can hear him through the wall instead of brushing it off Deacon takes steps to make Carys more comfortable.  When her daughter Sunny wouldn’t stop crying one night he came over and got her to settle and go to sleep.  As time passes Carys falls a little bit more in love with him but they are strictly friends…or are they?

I wanted to like this book more than I did.  It was enjoyable and I liked the couple for the most part.  I liked that it wasn’t insta relationship that it was a slow build into a relationship.  What I didn’t like was when Deacon walked away.  It seemed very abrupt in the story.  I actually had to go back and reread because we literally had him saying he loves Carys and Sunny and then we jump ahead 2 months and he’s gone.  It wasn’t that he left because I get where he why and it made the story better.  However, the author could have put in the scene between Carys and Deacon where he leaves instead of telling me it by a conversation between her and her friend.  That bit of the book really confused me and I had to reread to see if I missed something.  The author handled the making up really well.  There wasn’t an insta forgiven.  He had to work to prove he wasn’t going to leave her again.  I also really liked how the Charles situation was handled.  I was not expecting that arc to work out the way it did and it was a very nice surprise.  Overall, check out the book as it was a really good friends to lovers story just with a minor hiccup.

Oracle's Moon by Thea Harrison

Oracle's Moon (Elder Races Book 4)

5 Stars

Grace Andrea’s sister and brother-in-law were killed in a car crash that damaged her knee.  She inherited her niece and nephew.  As well as the powers and responsibility of the Oracle of Louisville.  When she helped Carling and Rune in the last book, she also acquired the interest of Khalil, Demonkind and Djinn prince of House Marid.  Khalil judges Grace on every decision she makes without understanding what is going on until she tears into him about, he choices.  The more they interact the more he understands and the angrier he gets at the Elder community for not doing what they are supposed to do.  He is determined to help Grace with her niece and nephew have the best life ever.  Grace is struggling with all her responsibilities and doesn’t understand why Khalil is so interested in their lives and weary about is interested but when weird things keep happening she will take all the help keeping her niece and nephew safe.

I loved this story so much.  It was heartbreaking what Grace and the kids had gone through and continued to go through for part of the book.  I loved see Khalil go from a cold Djinn to more personable with more time he spent with the family.  My all-time favorite scene was when he tore into Carling and Rune for not paying Grace for the services that she provided.  The anger he felt over the family struggling to make ends meet because people aren’t paying her, and Grace can’t get another job because of her duties.    I also loved that Grace would call him on all BS.  For their first date he got in a fight with a vampire who was being inappropriate with her.  She just noped out and left him to fighting because she was too tired and hungry to deal with that.  Behind Dragon Bound this was by far my favorite book in the series so far.

Audiobook

Sophie Eastlake narrated this story.  I really enjoyed her take on the voices of each of the characters.  As always it is interested to see how some names are pronounced differently then what I thought it was when I read the book.

Shadows in Death by J.D. Robb

Shadows in Death: An Eve Dallas Novel

3.5 Stars

Eve and Roarke are back for another murder.  When they arrive at a murder scene Roarke sees a man from his pasted and knows he is the one who killed the woman Eve is standing for.  Eve knows the husband hired someone to kill his wife and she needs to be careful tracking him down as the Lorcan Cobbe has a grudge against her husband.  With the help of their friends and associates they will get Cobbe before he hurts anyone they love.

This was a weird one for me to review.  I’ve read this series for years and so there are certain behaviors I expect from the characters and when those behaviors change it is a bit jarring.  In this book there is some character behaviors that changed and without explanation.  I also felt the original murder took a back seat to the search for Cobbe.  He was the story and not the murdered woman.  Overall, it was a good story but as a long time reader of the series parts were a bit jarring.

Traitor Queen by Danielle L. Jensen

The Traitor Queen (The Bridge Kingdom Book 2) by [Danielle L. Jensen]

2.5 Stars

Lara is on the run from her father when she hears her husband has been taken prisoner.  She knows this is a trap to get her and she doesn’t care.  She will do anything to get her husband back and free their kingdom, even go to people who hate her for help.  She will need the people who think she’s a traitor to help get her into her father’s castle to rescue the King.

I very much wanted to like this book.  I loved the first book.  It was new and different.  For me this book was a lot of action and not a lot of substance.  What I mean by this is there are skirmish upon skirmish but nothing personal ends up being resolved.  Lara is still a traitor to the kingdom and she risked everything to save them all.  It didn’t matter she was still hated.  Aren does something that to me was unforgivable towards the end of the book and it is swept under the rug to give them a happy for now.  There are no long term solutions in the book for their relationship.  Lara had planned on going to her sisters but Aren doesn’t want that.  They will figure it out.  Your people hate her.  That will totally be resolved…right.  Danielle L Jensen did set up the series to include 2 more books with Lara’s brother.  The next one will coincide with this book and I hope it will show some better conclusion for Lara and Aren.

Audio Book

Lauren Fortgang did a pretty good job bring the characters to life in this book.  The one BIG HUGE negative for me was at the beginning of every freaking chapter they had music for about 10 seconds.  This pulled me out of the story and I hated it so much.  This contributed to the 2.5 stars.  It was hard to get into the story when every chapter was interrupted.  I vaguely remember them doing something similar with the first book but it was thunder sounds and not music.

Bunny and Bear by Eve Langlais

Bunny And The Bear (Furry United Coalition Book 1) by [Eve Langlais]

3 Stars

Bears and bunnies don’t mix but when you throw in shifters anything can happen.  Miranda, bunny shifter, is assigned to watch to watch cranky bear Chase.  What she doesn’t expect is to be drawn to him.  He doesn’t think bunnies and bears should mix so tries to do everything he can to stay away from her.  It would help if every time he turned around she wasn’t there smelling so good.  When evil comes for him she will do everything in her power to save him and claim him.

To start with this book was so very funny.  I loved the humor in it a lot. What I got tired of was the innuendoes all the time.  Overall the humor is what made the book.  Not the sex scenes or necessarily the plot which it was lite on it was the humor.  If you aren’t offended by a lot and I mean a lot of graphic sex check this book out for the humor because the rest of the series is even better.

Audio Book

Abby Craden did a really good job narrating the book.  She gave each character a distinct voice.  I loved her voice for the bad guy.

What a Dragon Should Know by G.A. Aiken

What A Dragon Should Know (Dragon Kin series) by [G.A. Aiken]

5 Stars

Gwenvael the Handsome irritated Annwyl and is sent off to the north to try and broker an alliance with the Beast.  He is shocked when he finds out the Beast is Dagmar Reinholdt the only daughter to the Reinholdt.  Gwenvael does what he does best and annoys all of them until he can get the information from Dagmar.  However, the only way she will give him the information is if he helps her first.  This starts them on a journey to the south where their lives will be changed forever.

I loved this story so much.  Gwenvael is so cocky but he finds out the information they need in his own way.  I love how he freaked out Dagmar’s family to get her to do what he wanted too.  But the main reason this book was a 5 star read/listen for me was Dagmar herself.  She was just awesome.  She ignored and challenged Gwenvael throughout the book.  I also loved how she saved the day in the end.  There were so many emotional bits in this book that had me laughing and crying it just made the book that much more enjoyable.  Definitely one of the better books by G.A. Aiken.

Audio Book:

Hollie Jackson does an amazing job bring the new voices out and staying true to characters from past books.

Dragon Fated by Kara Lockharte and Cassie Alexander

Dragon Fated: A Sexy Urban Fantasy Romance (Prince of the Other Worlds Book 3) by [Kara Lockharte, Cassie Alexander]

3 Stars

We pick up where the last book ends with Andi and Damian together.  Damian gets a visit from his injured sister while Andi is visited by her brother.  Both get life altering news from their siblings.  The question is will it break them up?

This book should have been a 4 star like the other two books.  However, there was a massive cliff hanger at the end.  I HATE cliffhanger endings.  I feel it is laziness on the authors part to continually leave books open ended.  It diminishes my enjoyment of the story to have it end middle of the story so instead of preordering the next book I will pause until the last book in the series is released.  The book itself was really good.  It moved the overall story along nicely.  It was interesting to see the backstory of Damian and Andi.  If it weren’t for the cliff hanger ending.
