Written in Red by Anne Bishop

Written In Red (A Novel of the Others Book 1) by [Anne Bishop]

5 Stars

Meg Corbyn is a cassandra sangue or a blood prophet.  She’s run away from her handlers to be able to live.  She ends up running to the Lakeside Courtyard where human law doesn’t apply.  There the Others deal with humans because they must not because they want to.  When Meg comes to stay, she brings with her chaos and the Others will have to decide how important she is to them.

I loved this story.  It was a new take on fantasy.  It has parts that seem like it is set in the US but with different names.  I loved how innocent Meg was even though she had been abused in so many ways.  She wanted to be friends with everyone.  I loved the struggle the Others had learning how to care for Meg.  As well as, Meg trying to stand up for herself but stay within the bounds of the Courtyard rules.  Highly recommend this book.

Alexandra Harris does an amazing job narrating this story.  I loved the different voices she had for each of the characters.  She brought the characters to life.  Even at the faster reading speed I loved this story.

Defiance Dayne is destitute and jobless due to her divorce.  She is surprised by an inheritance of a house in Salem Massachusetts.  She just wants to find out why she was left the house and get back to Phoenix to fix her life.  Instead she finds a house everyone is terrified of.  A lawyer begging her to stay and a handyman covered in tattoos.  She feels like this might just be the home she needs.  She feels safe and secure for the first time in a while.  Her peaceful nights ends when neighbors start asking her to locate missing objects which leads to her discovering she is a witch.

I loved this book.  It’s pacing was spot on and I couldn’t put it down.  It was so funny too.  I wanted to know how the book ended so much that I ended up reading it in one sitting.  It was also interesting to see her come into her power.  Can’t wait to read the next book.

Halfway There by Eve Langlais

Halfway There: A Paranormal Women's Fiction Novel (Midlife Mulligan Book 1) by [Eve Langlais]

2 Stars

Naomi’s husband drops a bomb that he wants a divorce and that she’s let herself go.  She thought her marriage was fine until this moment.  She’s starting over and hopes her BFF and her kids will finally be able to have a relationship with her.

If this had been my first book of Eve Langlais I would not continue reading her books.  It is missing so much.  The pacing was off.  It was slow slow slow and then the ending was rushed.  I also didn’t like Naomi.  She was so freaking dense.  Like magic was right in front of her and she is still denying it.  This got old really fast.  Her self-doubt was also very grating to read throughout the book.  I did like her interactions with her daughter.  Overall if you are checking out Ms. Langlais for the first time I have other books from her that are way better.

Magical Midlife Madness by K.F. Breene

Magical Midlife Madness: A Paranormal Women's Fiction Novel (Leveling Up Book 1) by [K.F. Breene]

3.5 Stars

Jessie wasn’t upset when her husband wanted a divorce.  She was ready to move on anyways.  She tried moving in with her parents but that wasn’t going to work.  Jessie decides to go east and live in centuries old house of her relative.  The house has always drawn her and she wants a fresh start.  The house and her life are so much more than she thought it would be.

I liked this book a lot.  There were some issues like making it seem like 40 is old.  At one point jumping would hurt her knees.  Maybe it would but not every 40 year old would have that problem.  There was also a pacing issue.  Way too much time went into describing Austin’s muscles and not enough on the plot of the story.  The book was funny and I liked where it was going so I will be picking up the next book in the series and I hope there is less emphasis on the age thing.

Sucks to be Me by Kristen Painter

Sucks To Be Me: A Paranormal Women's Fiction Novel (First Fangs Club Book 1) by [Kristen Painter]

49-year-old Belladonna Barrone’s life isn’t what she wants it to be.  She married into the mob and has wanted out for years.  Her kids are finally protected and she’s about to get out when her husband is killed.  The boss tells her to finish the job her husband had started and it leads to her being turned into a vampire.  Now she has to figure out what this new life is going to be.

I am so mad I am reviewing this book this low.  It had so much promise and yet fell flat for me.  I have read all of her Nocturne Falls books and they are so good.  This book was so slow and had no humor in it at all.  It was a lot of oh woh is me my life is so horrible.  It got really old.  I had no connection with Belladonna at all and for most of the book I didn’t like her.  There is literally nothing to entice me to read the next book in the series.

Badger to the Bone by Shelly Laurenston

Badger to the Bone (The Honey Badger Chronicles Book 3) by [Shelly Laurenston]

4 Stars

Zezé was hired to kidnap her but he has other plans once he meets her.  Max “Kill it Again” MacKilligan let herself get kidnapped so she could take care of a problem created by her mother.  Instead she rescues Zezé from her team and gets him to realize that he is a shifter.  Now her sisters are forcing her to help him learn the ropes.

This book was a little slow to start but once it gets going it moves.  It is the conclusion of the Honey Badger Chronicles and it does an excellent job wrapping up storylines.  My most favorite part of the book was when Charlie went into the police station to get Max and her team out of custody.  All of these other bad ass shifters are like wasn’t us swear and she proceeds to have a knock down drag out fight with some new shifters and puts them in their place to get her sister out.  It was so funny I couldn’t stop laughing.  It would have been a five star for me but was a bit slow in the beginning.  I liked Max and Zezé together.  They balanced each other out and supported each other.  I also liked how the book ended with MacKilligan sisters’ father.  Overall, it was a really good book and tight up loose ends nicely.

Charlotte Kane did an amazing job once again.  She makes this book so much better.  If you don’t have time to read this book take the time to listen to it.

Devney Maxwell has been my best friend since we were six years old, but she has no idea I’m in love with her.

Even when I’m on the road playing professional baseball, she’s my home—the only one I’ve ever known. But when I return to Sugarloaf to care for the family farm, I discover she’s trying to talk herself into a life with the wrong man … and I become desperate.

It only takes a single, perfect kiss to change everything.

I have six months to get it right with Devney—to convince her to leave this town and turn that kiss into forever.

I aim to do just that as I spend my days coaching her nephew’s baseball team, fixing up the farm, and loving her with all I have. Finally, it seems like our relationship is secure and we’ll find a way to make it work.

Then tragedy strikes ... changing her life forever. She’s needed here more than ever, but as for me—there’s no way I can stay.
