Just the Tip by Helena Hunting and L.J. Shen

Just the Tip

Reggie is in Paris searching for her father.  He left when she was a small child for legal reasons and never came back.  She lies to her family and says she studying in Paris but instead takes a cafĂ© job to support herself while she searches.  One day a man comes in and she is smitten.  The problem he is there for not one but two dates and then he stiffs her on a tip.  Horace was told today would be the day he met his match.  What he wasn’t expecting was it to be his waitress.

Really cute short story.  It was insta love which I have issues believing but the story was still cute and they did have a long engagement so it balances out.  I would love to have more stories with more world building and to see where these two end up.  It was a light easy romance to listen too.

Narrator Review:

I am biased.  I absolutely adore Stella Bloom.  She does an amazing job with the voices for each character and accents.

Jason Clark did a really good job too.  I tend not to be a huge fan of male narrators speaking for a woman because of the octave they speak in.  This one didn’t bother me.  You could also tell when he changed characters.  He also did the different accents well.

How to Dance an Undead Waltz by Hailey Edwards

How to Dance an Undead Waltz (The Beginner's Guide to Necromancy Book 4) by [Hailey Edwards]

4 Stars

Grier is trying to get over her ex’s engagement.  She doesn’t have much time to grieve for what could have been when vampires are taking pot shots at her with bow and arrow.  The best way to protect herself is to reveal what she can do to the magical community.  With everything that is coming at her makes Grier realize why Linus has so many faces to protect himself.

This is the fourth story in the series, and they are not stand-alone books.  You do need to read them in order to understand what is going on in the plot.  What I like so far about this series is the consistency in it.  The author doesn’t try to make it anything it isn’t or to throw something out of left field.  She has a well-built world with character development in each of the stories.  The characters learn new things and progress from what they were to something else.  Hailey Edwards is also really good at throwing a heart wrenching betrayal in her books.  They make sense to the story and aren’t just for shock value.  These betrayals help Grier learn who she is and lets her know she can overcome it.  In this book I loved the relationship between Grier and her new friends.  In the last three books she was relying on her past friendships to get by and in this book you see her grow into more adult friendships.  I also loved seeing her with Linus.  His backstory is slowly being revealed and it makes me want to hug him.  Can’t wait to see where this series is going.

How to Break an Undead Heart by Hailey Edwards

How to Break an Undead Heart (The Beginner's Guide to Necromancy Book 3) by [Hailey Edwards]

4 Stars

Grier finally has Boaz as her boyfriend.  She should be happier, but he keeps dodging her calls and ignoring her.  After an attack on her home she has more important things to worry about than what he is up too.  She will need to figure out who she can rely on as an ally to keep her safe.

This book was so good.  I really liked how the relationship between Boaz and Grier was resolved.

This is a spoiler and if you don’t want to know what happens stop reading until you’ve read the book.

I was never a fan of Boaz or his sister Amelia.  They frustrated me with how selfish they were.  This book just showed how very selfish they are.  Amelia knew it would hurt Grier that Boaz was marrying someone else to protect Amelia and she didn’t warn Grier.  She let Grier be blindsided by all of it.  It showed where Grier fell on her list of priority.

I loved Linus in this story.  He helps her through everything without expecting anything in return.  The story progressed the overall plot of who the mystery vampire was.  I can’t wait for the next one to see where the story is going to go.

And all of it in front of my biggest rival, billionaire wunderkind Ian McRory.

I am broke.

I am disgraced.

I am alone.

I am a sucker.

That’s right.

Hasty.

Excerpt

Ian keeps chasing me, though. Why? And why does the fact that he won't let up thrill me?
That's the part I hate. The thrill. The zing of arousal that shoots through me every time that jerkface–who isn't a jerk–does this. He's pursuing me and I don't understand it, but I do like it.
More than I want to admit.
The fight inside me feels like layers of muscles in my abs are in a tug-of-war. Ian McCrory represents everything I fought to achieve in my old life. Self-made billionaire. Liked by everyone. Admired by even more.
Respected for his hardcore negotiating skills.
And droolingly handsome.
He was my nemesis. My enemy. The guy who sniped deals, and who I sniped from. We were adversaries, but he flipped the script, didn't he? Coming to my rescue. Aiding me in a time of need.
I don't want to need him.
And I especially don't need to want him.
I stare at the phone. Just as my finger goes to the Power button to turn it off again, three dots appear.
One dinner. Indulge me?
I go into my contacts, and I block him.

How to Claim an Undead Soul by Hailey Edwards

How to Claim an Undead Soul (The Beginner's Guide to Necromancy Book 2) by [Hailey Edwards]

4 Stars

Grier’s life was easier before she was presented to society for the second time.  She is dealing with people going after her to use her for her newly discovered powers.  All she wants is to be able to give her tours and hang with her friends and just maybe steal some kisses from Boaz.  Instead she’s worrying about missing spirits and vampires turning up shriveled.  She needs to discover who is causing all of these problems.

OMG the ending of this book was over the top.  I loved where the story went.  The book balanced out the whiney parts of Grier with her willing to learn what she needs to learn to be able to protect herself.  I loved her interactions with Linus.  Linus is soft spoken misunderstood man and I hope he gets his happily ever after.   I can’t wait to see what happens next.

How to Save an Undead Life by Hailey Edwards

How to Save an Undead Life (The Beginner's Guide to Necromancy Book 1) by [Hailey Edwards]

4 Stars

Grier Woolworth works as a tour guide taking people around Savannah telling them ghost stories.  What the guest don’t know is that she is a necromancer who has recently gotten out of supernatural prison.  Grier is trying to put her life back together and do the best she can with what she has.  When her life is turned upside down again with a status change that puts her in the crosshairs of the supernatural community.

The book was awesome in a strange way.  It was different in a good way.  The little bit you learn about what Grier has been through makes it more understandable when she is a bit whiney and she is a bit whiney at times.  Her friend Amelia and her potential love interest Boaz were a little bit more frustrating for me.  They take Grier’s imprisonment as a personal affront and how dare she not consider their feelings.  I can’t wait to read the next book to see where this story is going.
