Vicki Devine made a critical error in telling the Others about trickster night and they want to partake in the festivities. What should have been a lighthearted night of tricks and treats turns deadly when someone shows up pretending to be Crowbones the Crowgard’s bogeyman. Chief Grimshaw Ilya Sanguinati and the rest of their friends will have to work together to find out who is responsible for stirring up the Others.

I loved this book. In the original story I liked all the characters, and they are all back with this one. Vicki is no longer struggling with money but still has some issues with men. This book also gave some insight into what’s been happening since wild Country. I loved finding out about certain characters. One of the best things I liked about this book was who the bad guys were. No spoilers as it’s a major plot point. Now I want to go and reread all of these books again.

Human Law doesn’t apply on land controlled by the others.  Vicki, who has been abused by an ex-husband and given the Jumble as part of her divorce.  She has to get it up and running after years of neglect.  When she gets it a little fixed up, she starts taking on lodgers.  What she doesn’t know is her first lodger is a Crow.  She discovers this fact when she walks in on Aggie trying to heat up an eye.  The discovery of the body the eye belongs to starts Vicki down a path where she could lose not only the Jumble but her life.  The Others are determined to keep Vicki and will have to do a lot to keep her safe.

You do not have to have read the series The Others.  It can be read all by itself though is helped if you have read the series.  When I first started this book, I was a bit disappointed and missed the characters I had grown to love.  I had to take a step back and look at it as its own book.  The story was well written and interesting.  I loved the interplay between Vicki and the Others.  It was also interesting to see the Others interactions with all the characters.  In this book the Others were slightly different than with Meg.  With Meg they were more friends and in this they liked Vicki, but it was more like a neighborly friendship than besties.  I am hopeful that Anne Bishop will write another story in this location as it would be interesting to see how the relationships will grow and change.  Besides the story being awesome the pacing was spot on.  I never felt like the story lagged and I wanted to finish listening to the story in one sitting.

Alexandra Harris narrates this book and just like all the other books she does an amazing job.  Even if the book hadn’t been the best, I still would have reviewed her narration as a 5.
