Bad Bridesmaid by Elise Faber releases on

It began with a cock.

Of the rooster variety.

It ended with a groomsman toppling into the wedding cake.

Heidi hadn’t meant to be a bad bridesmaid. She loved her best friend and the man Kate was marrying.

Who she didn’t love?

The groom’s brother.

The cocky—no pun intended—jerk had made Heidi aware of exactly what he thought of her. That being, she wasn’t worth anything more than a quick romp and a disappearing act before the sun rose.

Fine. Whatever. She’d done her own version of the Disappearing Act on more than one occasion. It didn’t matter that she had thought they had shared something . . . well, something more.

Clearly, she’d been wrong, and now he was dead to her.

Of course, that was before she had to walk down the aisle with him.

Because that’s when all hell broke loose.

Anna's life is full of complications and they all go back to husband and mate Charles.  When Charles objects to his da going to a summit over werewolves coming out to the public Anna has to make them both see reason.  She and Charles end up being sent to the summit.  They work with the Fae and the werewolves to keep everyone in line.  Anna is attacked by vampires and they will need to figure out who is behind the attack and stop them from causing more problems.

I enjoyed reading this book.  Anna is coming into herself more.  She more open and willing to except the love from Charles.  I loved seeing her get both Bran and Charles to listen to reason.  The ending was really good and I enjoyed the twists to the end.  I want to know more about the pack who hosted the summit.  I know some of them have a short story but I would love to see more about them.  Can't wait for the next book.

The Challenge by Susan Kearney

 3 Star

Tessa Carmen, Secret Service Agent, is willing to give her life for the president.  When she jumps in front of a bullet to save the president she wakes up in the future.  She is told she will be doing the Challenge to get Earth into the Federation.  She needs to rely on mysterious alien Kahn to prepare for the Challenge.  Kahn doesn't know what to do with this outspoken woman.  He needs her to succeed at the Challenge to save his people from starving.  When they're forced to marry will they be able to meld their beliefs and live happily together?

I wanted to like this book more.  I enjoyed Tessa banter with the computer Dora and pretty much everyone else except for Kahn she's supposed to end up with.  I hated him.  She's went from thinking she was going to die to jumping 3 centuries into the future and just supposed to except everything as he says it.  He wants her to change everything to suit him.  There is one scene that made me not like the book.  As part of the challenge she is given a million credits.  Key word here is SHE is given.  Well she ends up investing in stuff for his world and spends all of the credits.   He gets mad because HE had plans for it.  Never lets her explain.  Decides he's going to punish her sexually to prove he's in control and leaves her wanting because that's his right as the man.  This would have been fine if she didn't immediately forgive him.  Like instantly forgiven him.  The other issue was later on his home world.  A group of his people try and kill her because she saved a boy from drowning.  Her thanks was to be shoved into the water and nearly drowned herself.  What happens is all is forgiven because the women were confused.  Overall, the writing was good which is why the 3 and not lower rating but there were some major issues with the story itself.  I am going to see if the next book is better.

When Dillion Stitch left her hometown, she had no intention of going back. But when her brother gets into trouble, Dillion reluctantly agrees to return home to take her place at the family business.

Being back in Pearl Lake after all these years feels familiar, but also brings a few surprises. She’s quick to notice that someone new has shown up at the cottage next door.  Dillion gets more than an eyeful when she goes to check out the newcomer and meets Donovan “Van” Firestone—her beloved neighbor’s grandson—in all his unclothed glory.

Having gotten off to a rocky start, it’s not long before they begin bickering with each other all over town. All that back and forth inevitably sparks an undeniable attraction. But Dillion’s family has issues, Van’s family resents him, and neither Dillion nor Van feels truly at ease in the small town. For these Pearl Lake exiles, home isn’t just where the heart is—it’s where things get complicated.

Anna and Charles head home to Montana after cleaning up the mess in Chicago.  Before they can settle in Charles is ordered to go into the mountain to track down a rogue wolf who attacked a human.  Charles doesn't want Anna to join him and see him have to kill someone but is ordered to take her with.  While in the mountains they will have to work together to bring down evil trying to take over the wolf pack.

I loved seeing how Charles and Anna navigate a new relationship when their wolves have already accepted the other.  Anna gets to see more of what Charles does for the pack and his father and has to decide if she can live this life.  She struggles with all of it and that's life.  She hasn't had it easy, she didn't pick it, and now she's mated.  It's a lot to handle and you can see the struggle.  Meanwhile, you have Charles who is dealing with a new experience and can't figure out how to work with her history and still do his job.  It's interesting to see the struggle he has.  It was a good addition to the series and it built off the short story nicely.  Can't wait to read the next one.

Alpha and Omega: A Companion Novella to Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs

5 Star

Anna Latham didn't sign up to be a werewolf.  She is and she has to live with it.  When she discovers a boy was killed that had been at the pack house she calls the Marrok.  He sends his son Charles to sort out the Chicago pack.  He will have to decide what he's going to do and how he's going to talk Anna into going home with him.

There is a content warning with this book.  Anna was brutalized prior to events in the book and it is mentioned.  This is book is how the Alpha and Omega series starts and links to Mercy books I've previously reviewed..  It is during Moon Called in the timeline.  I loved how this one worked out.  Charles is old in all things and he falls for Anna almost right away.  He realizes she is an omega and is trying to give her all her options without forcing her to do anything and it is so cute.  I also loved that even though she had been beat down repeatedly she still holds her own.  The end of this book leads into the next book immediately.

Call to Engage by Tawny Weber

4 Star

After a mission gone wrong, Lieutenant Elijah Prescott is trying to spend his leave with his cousin.  He's trying to figure out how it all went so wrong and if he wants to stay in the SEALs.  He ends up connecting with an old love who just wants to be casual,  When things get hard will Ava Monroe step up and help Elijah?

This was a library book sale find and I liked it a lot.  The mystery behind the mission was interesting with it being an inside man and how that was resolved.  I also loved seeing Ava and Elijah come back together after years apart.  It was interesting to see the growth Ava made from when they were first together to today.  When you find out what drove them apart to begin with and when she finally excepts him after something major happens I ended up giving her some major props.  Military spouses get the short end a lot and this book shows why and how hard it is.  I will be checking out the other books in the series.
