Hero She Wants by Anna Hackett

4 Stars

The last thing he wants is to trek into the jungle to save the President’s daughter.

Shepherd “Shep” Barlow left the military behind. All he wants is to stay on his Colorado mountain—alone, with no interruptions, and no people. He especially likes to avoid people.

Then his former commander arrives, asking him to risk his life on a deadly mission to Central America. A mission to rescue the archeologist daughter of the President of the United States.

Once a member of a covert Ghost Ops team, Shep has the skills to get in quietly and rescue Ms. Sinclair. And as much as he wishes otherwise, he can’t leave an innocent woman in danger.

Hayden Sinclair loves her work. It keeps her far away from the liars, cheats, and phonies in Washington D.C. But when she’s abducted from her archeological dig in Nicaragua, she’s plunged into a life-or-death situation. Her captors plan to use her as a bargaining chip, and Hayden knows she has to escape.

What she never expected was to collide with the world’s biggest, grumpiest rescuer.

On the run in the jungle with six and a half feet of rugged, muscular, scowling man, she finds Shep rude and annoying. But as her captors ruthlessly hunt them, she also discovers a man who’ll risk his own life to protect hers.

Neither of them are looking for love, especially when they have to fight to survive…besides, there could never be a happy ending for the daughter of the President and a grumpy, battle-scarred soldier, could there?

This one is with Shep from book 1 and it was worth the wait. He is called in to rescue the president’s daughter, Hayden. They connect while on a run in a South American jungle. I loved how she fell first and went after her man when he was all about burying his head in the sand as he felt she could do better. I just loved this book.

Hero She Needs by Anna Hackett

4 Stars

The last thing he expects to catch in his river is a billionaire heiress.

Loner Boone Hendrix left the military with ghosts that haunt him. He lives with his dog Atlas on a farm in Vermont. Alone. Just the way he likes it. Until he rescues a half-drowned, beautiful brunette from his river.

Gemma Newhouse is the daughter of the richest man in America, and from the abrasions on her wrists and her drugged state, she’s on the run from someone dangerous. She’s nothing like Boone expected—sweet, smart, and likes baking—and she ignites a fierce need inside him.

Being a member of a covert Ghost Ops team taught him deadly skills, and he’ll use them all to keep her safe.

Gemma can’t remember the last twenty-four hours. All she knows is that someone abducted her. Someone dangerous. Her only goal is survival and she’s used to taking care of herself. She’s a constant disappointment to her driven, successful parents. She doesn’t want a brilliant career, all she wants is to bake and make people smile.

Finding herself in Boone’s strong arms wasn’t on her plan. Nor was his rugged face, hard body, and gold-brown eyes. She sees how much he’s cut himself off from life, how he believes he’s broken.

Thrust together, she realizes this quiet hero will do anything to protect her. Despite the danger around them, they can’t resist their growing attraction, but her captors are hunting her…

And Boone is the only thing standing in their way.

This one took me a minute to get into but once I did, I blew through the book. I loved how strong Gemma was and how she melded with Boone. Boone is a troubled man who doesn’t think he deserves anything. Gemma gets under his skin and stays there. If you’ve liked any or all of her other books you will like this one.

Stone by Anna Hackett

4 Stars

He’s the new silver fox recruit at Sentinel Security.

The hot, tough former Marine Raider.

And he won’t touch her because he works with her brother.

Real estate agent Magnolia “Nola” Newhouse has it all. Okay, not quite all. She loves her work, has a growing collection of designer heels, and is about to become an aunt…she’s just missing the love of her life. She’s watched her brother and her best friend fall in love, and Nola wants that too.

When she first sees the big, rugged silver fox across the bar, she feels an instant connection, and knows he does too. They share a passionate kiss, then he discovers who her brother is…

A short and sweet short story. I loved seeing Nola and Stone get their HEA. Plus seeing all the original characters was amazing to read up on what they are up to. The only downside was it was too short. I wanted more of the story and the characters.

Keep by Anna Hackett

4 Stars

Macy knows life is too short and refuses to be down about anything. She’s sunshine and daisies about everything. Colton Fury is the opposite. He knows how hard life can be and that not everything works out the way you plan. He has too much on his plate to be fantasizing about his assistant but when she starts getting weird calls and someone breaks into her home all bets are off. He will do anything to keep her safe.

I absolutely loved Ember and Colton. They are so opposite that they work together. The story was well written and I loved the struggle between Colton and Ember. Neither of them wanted something permanent and they fought it so hard but fail epically. The one big issue I had was how the bad guy is caught. Ember does something that is too stupid to live. It all works out and I am going to overlook it for the rest of the story being so good. Can’t wait for the next brother.

Fury by Anna Hackett

4 Stars

Ember is on the run from an unknown entity who murdered her parents and framed her. She ends up working for most eligible bachelor Dante Fury. He owns and runs his bar. Tired of being one of the most eligible bachelors in the city he talks Ember into being his pretend girlfriend. He wants to protect her but also keep people away from him. Will he be able to keep her safe and keep his hands off of her?

Absolutely adored this book. We met Dante in a previous book and now we get to see him get his HEA with Ember. These two are so perfect for each other and I loved seeing them struggle with what they want vs what they should do. If you’ve liked Hackett’s other romance books you will enjoy this one. It is one of her best ones and will make you very happy.

Hex by Anna Hackett

4 Stars

Jet “Hex” Adler is the goddess of all things technology. She is there to support the team with all intel and comms. She loves what she does and that makes her job easy. She may be lucky with her job but is unlucky in love. She lusts after Cain, CIA agent, but he isn’t interested. Or so she thinks. He’s too invested in his job and doesn’t think there is room for someone in his life, but Hex tests him. When he needs her help catching someone selling technology secrets, he’s not happy with Hex being placed in danger. Will he be able to keep his hands to himself?

I really enjoyed the story. Hex is all in with Cain but he has things to work through before he can agree to the HEA. It was an interesting journey to see. I liked the overall story as well. It flowed nicely and makes me interested in seeing what’s next in this world.

Knightmaster by Anna Hackett

4 Stars

Exploring new places is what xenoanthropologist Kennedy Black likes to do. When an opportunity comes up that allows her to travel to Oron to meet the Oronis for a ball and possibly a new connection for earth. What she wasn’t expecting was the instant connection with Knightmaster Ashtin Caydor and then for the ball to be assaulted, the queen taken, and evidence pointing to humans being behind the whole thing. Kennedy is determined to prove earth had nothing to do with it.

I loved this spin off series. It has everything I like about an alien romance. The one issue I had was how quickly Ashtin was to jump to the earth convoy being responsible for the kidnapping of his queen. Pacing was slightly off for me. It was going along nicely then it flew to Ashtin and Kennedy almost hooking up to the queen getting kidnapped. It was a bit jarring. Good start to a new series.

Best Books of the Year

List of My Top 10 Books of the Year and Why I liked them so much. Ironically when figuring this one out it was harder to justify why I liked them best vs the worst list where I could come up with a couple words to describe my hate of the book. Some of these were just the books hit just right that they kept me interested and wanting more. They are also books that I’ve reread already this year as I did enjoy them so much which is why I’ve selected them. Here’s the best of the books I’ve read this year. If you're interested in the review just click on the title and author and it will take you to the review.

1. Tryst in the Dark by Grace McGinty – Well written omegaverse story

Hades by Anna Hackett

3 Star

CIA analyst Gabbi Hansley was planning on going home and vegging after a long day when her co-worker talks her into dropping some files off with Matteo “Hades” Mancini. She was planning on it being an in and out until someone started shooting at Hades and Gabbi gets dragged into the fire fight. Now the people after him think they can use her to get to him. Hades needs to protect her and takes her back to New York. Now to keep his hands off her. When it’s all clear for her to return home will he be able to let her walk away?

This was not one of my favorite books by Anna Hackett. Literally within 10 minutes of meeting Gabbi is blurting out her sexual history and they end up hooking up pretty quickly too. It just didn’t work well for me. I liked Gabbi and Hades overall, but the story was just meh. I struggled with writing the review which normally is written and published the same week the book is out and I couldn’t figure out why I didn’t like the book. The big fight with the bad guys didn’t work well for me. It just was a meh book.

Wolf by Anna Hackett

4 Star

Lainie Madden has been cheated on by previous partners and she's sworn off love. She's thrown her whole being into growing her tech company. When she starts to get threats she brushes them off but they get progressively worse until her best friend insists they loop in her brother. Nick "Wolf" Garrick is second-in-command at Sentinel Security and has spent his entire adult life fighting for others. When his sister comes to him with Lainie's problem he's all in to help, he just has to remember that this is his sister's best friend and off limits. The more time they spend together the more the line is blurred and he doesn't care that Lainie should be off limits. Will they be able to get past their own issues and find out who is gunning for Lainie without falling in love?

I enjoyed this spinoff series. Lainie and Nick were enjoyable characters though I would have liked to have more background on Nick then we got. I loved the ending where Norcross and Team 52 made appearances. The bad guy was just meh. If you like the other series you will enjoy this one.

5 Star
Ballerina Saskia is kidnapped off the street and taken to California. She's able to get a call off to her friend Cam to come and save her. Cam and the rest of Norcross are able to track her down and save her. Now they just need to track down the billionaire who thought he could steal women for his pleasure. Cam may not be ready to move on from his deployment but he's determined to keep Saskia safe. Will he be able to ignore the attraction?

I loved Cam and Saskia's story. Every time Saskia is kidnapped She's able to save herself, Best scene for me was when she was first taken Norcross group comes in to save her and she's climbing down the side of the house. The struggles Cam was dealing with, were heart breaking. I loved how Saskia is able to get under Cam's defenses Hackett also sets up her new series with Saskia's brother and that one looks so good and I can't wait for it to come out.

Overlord by Anna Hackett

4 Star

Mallory is the test pilot to see if earth can create wormholes like those that took some humans all the way across the galaxy to Kor Magma. The jump was supposed to just take them across our galaxy but ends up taking them light years away where the plane crash lands on a mysterious planet. Zhalto sees a plane crash on his world and thinks it is another plan from his father. When he finds an earth woman, he will help her track down her partner. Will they be in time to save Mallory’s friend?

My favorite series is the Galactic Gladiators and this is a spin off series. I loved both Mallory and Zhalto. The chemistry between hem was off the chart. Mallory kicking ass and doing what she thinks is best saves the day. I can’t wait to see where the series goes. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next one.

The Detective by Anna Hackett

3 Star

Savannah Cole is on the run from a stalker. She never stays anywhere to long in fear that he will catch up with her. She ends up house sitting next to Detective Hunter Morgan. He is intrigued by her and wants to know who she is. When he figures out, she’s on the run from something he is determined to help her out. Now he just has to convince her he can keep her safe.

I was looking forward to this one and it just didn’t hit the mark for me. Savannah frustrated me and I wasn’t a huge fan of her. There were several times in the book she was too stupid to live, and Hunt deserved a better partner. You don’t need to have read the rest of the series to read this one. The writing was good I really just didn’t like Savannah. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Emperor Brodin took her in to help her with her shift but is distracted by an enemy sent to get him in line with his father. Will they be able to stop the attacks and keep the citizens of Damar

Safe?

I enjoyed Poppy and Brodin finding their way to a HEA. There were a couple of twists I didn't see coming. I am curious to see what the next book brings and what happens with Brodin's father. I am also interested to see who ends up with the last brother. Can't wait.

Powerbroker by Anna Hackett

5 Star

Detective Brynn Sullivan is going undercover with a motorcycle gang to track down who is bringing in deadly drugs that are killing kids. She needs Vander Norcross’ connection to get her in. He doesn’t want to use it to get her in as he wants to protect her even though she is a cop. Once she’s in he refuses to leave her alone because he couldn’t live with himself if something were to happen. Not to mention he’s fighting his attraction to her. Working together will they be able to stay safe and take down the bad guys?

I loved this story. It was wonderful seeing Van stumble when he always has it together. Seeing Brynn push all his buttons was amusing. I think the best part of the book for me was seeing Brynn rescue herself. She didn’t need Van but she wanted him. I loved the build up to them coming together and seeing their relationship grow from colleagues to lovers. I very much want the next book in the series but I have to wait until next year for another one.

Hacking Mr. CEO by Anna Hackett

4 Star

Remi may hack but never crosses the line until her Foster Mother gets sick.  They need an infusion of cash to pay for her treatments.  She will do anything to find the cash to save her mother.  She accepts a job to hack a system which she isn’t happy about but if it helps her mother, she’s all in.  Hacking billionaire Rivera is tantalizing game of cat and mouse and when he catches her what will he do with her?

I liked these two.  It is understandable why she would want to go on the dark web to find high paying jobs to help her mom, but all her problems start here.  Her family wouldn’t be in danger if she hadn’t taken the job.  Rivera was amazing.  He had been used in the past and he deserved his happy ending.  This book fit in with the other books and it builds to show what is going to happen with some of her other series.  Can’t wait to see what comes out next.

Stealing from Mr. Rich by Anna Hackett

4 Star

Monroe's brother is trouble again and that makes her have to do something she swore she would never do again, steal from someone.  The people who have her brother want her to get a rare piece of jewelry from Billionaire Zane Roth.  For her brother she will but she isn't happy about it.  Zane isn't happy about being stolen from but when he finds out why she stole from him he makes it his mission to help her save her brother and recover the jewels.

This was a different format for Anna Hackett. She had both first and third person. I personally didn't mind it switching between but she also did it by character. All of Monroe was first person and all of Zane was third. If she switched back to third person for the next book I wouldn’t object either.  I loved the premise of the story. It reminded me of so many of my favorite heist movies.  I liked both Monroe and Zane.  They meshed well and I wanted to see how they figured out away out of the mess Monroe’s brother was in.

The Bodyguard by Anna Hackett

4 Star

Princess Sofia of Caldova is visiting San Francisco under the guise of displaying the Caldova jewels.  What she really wants is to find the men responsible for the rape of her friend that lead to the friend killing herself.  She needs them to pay even if it means putting herself at risk.  What she doesn't plan for is being watched by Rome Nash.  Rome is the ultimate professional.  Even after Sofia had kissed him he kept it professional but he didn't want to.  He wanted her but shouldn't have her that is until her life is in danger.

I really enjoyed finding out who was out to get Sofia.  The struggle Rome had was fun to read.  There weren't any time in this book that I felt Sofia was to stupid to live.  She actually kicked ass and listened when Rome told her to run.  The big bad was interesting and wasn't who I thought it was and I love being surprised.  Overall, a good addition to the series and definitely a good read.

The Specialist by Anna Hackett

5 Star

Harlow Carlson, executive assistant extraordinary, is being loaned out to workaholic Easton Norcross.  She was picked specifically because she won't throw herself at him in hopes of gaining access to his money and his hot body.  The problem is she does want him but is too professional to go after him.  That is until he decides all of her problems were his to handle and her problems were bad.  Several factions want her for her father's debt and they will do anything to get what is owed them.  Will Easton keep her safe and get her to agree to be his?

I loved this book.  Harlow has the hots for her temporary boss but refuses to cave because she is a professional.  That is until her life is threatened and HE refuses to back off.  I loved seeing the struggle she had accepting his help.  She didn't want to be one of many who took from him.  Which made it that much sweeter when she did.  The only big negative I had was towards the end and she ends up kidnapped.  I kind of rolled my eyes a bit at that part just because it was a bit contrived.  It was minor enough that it didn't knock the score down.  Excellent addition to the series.

Soul of Eon by Anna Hackett

4 Star

Meeting a bunch of Eon Warriors after the successful implementation of the laser weapon Commander Kaira Chand of the Australian Air Force, was surprised to feel instantly connected to Medical Commander Thane Kann-Eon.  After losing her husband and father in the same attack by the Kantos she is uninterested in finding love again.  All Thane has wanted was a match with someone but he can't force himself to mate someone who isn't interested even if it kills him.  When they are kidnapped off earth and dropped on a training camp island for the Kantos they will need to work together to get out of the mess their in.  They meet some surprising allies along the way.  With the help will they be able to take out Kantos leaders?

This one was a lot different from the last couple of books.  Yes they were kidnapped and dropped on another planet but that is about the only similar part.  I loved them showing how they had to fight their way around the planet to get a message off world to their people.  One of the best parts was the fact that they found some Kantos who weren't evil and wanted to help them.  Loved seeing it since in life not everyone is evil.  It will be interesting to see what they do with the next and last (maybe) one with the King.
