Oxford Heat by Hannah Haze

3 Stars

Avoid Trouble. Trouble like Noah Wood.

Cora hates Alphas — they're arrogant, obnoxious and, in her experience, dangerous. She's worked hard to leave her troubled past behind her and make it to university where she's steering clear of them, even if her body makes her weak and needy for one — and one in particular. After all, Noah may look good, but he's everything she despises.

Noah is a player, both on and off the pitch, with a place on the university's rugby team and a phone full of women's numbers. But it's the stuck-up little Omega, Cora, who has caught his eye. Too bad she wants nothing to do with him and his propensity for trouble.

That is until he finds her alone and about to start a heat...

This was fine to read but nothing amazing. There isn’t any true connection between Cora and Noah. They just spend her heat together but somehow fall in love with each other. It was just meh.

Monster’s Desire by Jillian West

3.5 Stars

The picturesque town of North Falls is as beautiful as it is deadly.

When Nadia is called to help deliver a human woman's little elven babies, she knows she can't say no. After all, she's masquerading as a fertility witch since blood witches were hunted out of existence several generations ago.

But North Falls isn't like any other sanctuary city Nadia has been to and the differences are enough to make her blood boil.

Haven is run by decent monsters, but a corrupt council with an agenda of their own leads North Falls. The ward around their town is failing and they aren't above compelling the witch to their bidding.

Everything will have to fall into place for her to survive the trip. Unfortunately for Nadia, her luck has never been all that great. Add in a rogue alpha wolf, a council-appointed vampire guard who would be more accurately described as a spy, and a couple of demons from her past and it looks like she might just have a fighting chance.

Well, until the council ups the ante that is. Will her newfound protectors be enough to keep her alive? Or will they run when they learn her secrets?

I was so looking forward to this one but it wasn’t as good as the first two. I missed all the original characters and felt there was a pacing issue. There were times it moved but other times I was frustrated with no movement at all. Overall, it was fine and a nice way to round out the series.

Two Wrongs Make Right by Chloe Liese

3 Stars

Opposites become allies to fool their matchmaking friends in this swoony reimagining of Shakespeare’s beloved comedy, Much Ado About Nothing.

Jamie Westenberg and Bea Wilmot have nothing in common except a meet-disaster and the mutual understanding that they couldn't be more wrong for each other. But when the people closest to them play Cupid and trick them into going on a date, Jamie and Bea realize they have something else in common after all—an undeniable need for revenge.

Soon their plan is in place: Fake date obnoxiously and convince the meddlers they’re madly in love. Then, break up spectacularly and dash everyone's hopes, putting an end to the matchmaking madness once and for all.

To convince everyone that they’ve fallen for each other, Jamie and Bea will have to nail the performance of their lives. But as their final act nears and playing lovers becomes easier than not, they begin to wonder: What if Cupid’s arrow wasn’t so off the mark? And what if two wrongs do make a right?

I normally love Chloe Liese books but this one was just ok. Everyone of the characters irritated me. They all had issues and instead of talking about the issues they decided to pressure and push others to do what they wanted. Everyone was manipulating everyone. Concept was good but I just didn’t love it.

Monster’s Wife by Jillian West

4 Stars

The picturesque town of Haven may offer sanctuary for all, but the irony is getting harder to miss: monsters are vanishing.

Aline knows better than to meddle. The runaway Princess of Faere learned the hard way what happens when others see what her magic can do.

No, it's far better to focus on her own problems like running The Monster's Den and staying off the paranormal council's radar.

Tragedy strikes Haven as things are finally starting to come together for the lonely fae, and Aline has no choice but to intervene.

The blows keep coming when the paranormal council initiates a full-scale inquiry into why monsters vanish from Haven.

It seems her house of cards is about to tumble.

Can she trust the ghosts of her past and the unhinged monsters desperate to be a part of her future to help keep her safe?

Will they even want to when they see what she's capable of?

There is some overlap with the first book. It was interesting to read and see it from a different perspective. I also loved the give and take between FMC and her men. The original mates were very much misunderstood and I feel bad for them. The continued world building in this book adds to the overall series. Can’t wait for the third one.

Ready or Not by Jillian West

3.5 Stars

Vale Reed finally found a pack of trustworthy men to build a life with, but chaos threatens to upend the safety she thought she'd found.

Time is ticking away on her pregnancy, and everything feels out of control with Andrew still on the loose. Not to mention Mercer’s family is in town, and with his inheritance hanging in the balance, they can't stay hidden on the compound forever.

Vale’s pack rallies around her, dead set on keeping her and the baby safe, but bad guys are more dangerous than good men.

After all, they don't have lines they won't cross.

This was a bit of a let down from book one but was still good. Vale forgave the guys way too fast and it irritates me. I wanted more with the ring the guys were going after. I also felt like Vale was so stupid during the fight scene. It also could have been one story instead of two. Still good but could have been better.

Not Ready by Jillian West

4 Stars

Vale Reed is doing the best she can.

After a one-night stand gone wrong, she's pregnant and completely on her own. Cam shows and working full-time serving drinks helps stash away money for when she gives birth, but they also put her in the line of sight of a creep who wants her for his own. When he takes things too far, Vale has no choice but to run.

Luckily, she ends up with the one person she really trusts.

Bishop and his packmates, Holt and Mercer, run Assurance Private Security. They're up for the task of keeping the very pregnant omega safe. She's even able to repay their kindness when Mercer needs a fake wife to claim his inheritance.

But Vale’s stalker isn't giving up without a fight, and it turns out he's more connected than any of them could have guessed.

Will they be able to keep Vale safe? Is there really a chance for love to bloom under such dire circumstances?

Just when it gets really good it ends. I know I say it a lot but this a different omegaverse. Normally omegas are pampered and spoiled but Vale is barely surviving. I love how she meets the guys and works her way into their lives. They are all in to help her but don’t want it to be forever…at least to begin with. The twisty bit at the end was amazing and made me so mad that I wanted the next part immediately but had to wait.

Pliar by Jane Washington

3 Stars

Ironside is more than a regular academy. It’s also the biggest reality TV show in the world … and a very elaborate, very luxurious prison.

Their hallowed halls are ruled by the Betas, Omegas, and Deltas—but this year, the officials are stirring things up.

Isobel Carter—the only rare Sigma to be accepted—is the first sign. But there are others. Many others. A sudden influx of powerful Alphas will turn academy life, and Isobel’s life, upside down.

She might be the lowest rung on the ladder, but in order to survive Ironside, where social media is king and consequences are deadly, she will need to make her mark.

She will need to climb.

This is a different omegaverse story. They throw in a delta designation which our Isobel is. It’s supposedly the lowest of the low. There are so many hints that lead to me thinking this is going to be the wrong assumption. I also don’t trust some of the people who she thinks are her friend. It’s also an academy book but it’s referenced as a TV show which isn’t really talked about much. I like some of the character development but wanted more. Overall, I’m curious about it enough to read the next book.

Blackened Blade by Isla Davon

4 Stars

Not many people get a second chance, let alone a second life.
I died. Burning in a prison cell I spent years of my life rotting away in.
I had been beaten, battered and bruised beyond repair...but not broken.
Never broken.
By whatever miracle, I’ve been brought back ten years into my past and before I was locked away...
But to a different kind of hell…Wensridge Academy. A place filled with only memories of pain and suffering.
But this time I’ll break the wheel of misfortune, and with it all the people who caused my suffering and death.
This time I’ll have the life I should have always had.

Why did I read this before all books were out. It starts with time travel, which I’m not a huge fan of but this one made me happy. Micai can get revenge for all those that harmed her. All things that make for a good read for me. I wanted more world building and character development. I also wanted some back history but I’m hoping that will come in future books with how the book is set up. It was one of the best books I’ve read this year.

Krammin with a Kraken by Sedona Ashe

4 Stars

I’m a kraken, but that’s a secret between you and me, okay? Don’t go betraying me or I might blame you for slaying me. Well, you and whichever trophy hunter thinks they can take me down.

I’m just on land to graduate from Slaymore Academy with honors—how hard can it be?

Turns out… really, really hard. *wink wink*

Regardless, I’m determined to stay focused. I’m going to learn from the best so I can return to the Bering Sea and make it safer for all the species who call it home.

It’s important that I closely guard my secret, so that when I reveal myself, I can prove the point that krakens aren’t the mindless monsters we’ve been made out to be.

And finally, I’m determined to not fall in love. Who needs that distraction—especially with so much on the line? Contrary to what my parents believe, I’m not just a baby-maker or a pawn to marry off in exchange for an alliance. I’m going to make a change for the krakens.

But Fate’s an evil son-of-a-you-know-what who’s been meddling in my business. Now, I’ve caught the eye of the campus’ golden boy… and he’s determined to find a way past my barriers and into my heart.

Poor guy has no idea what he’s getting into. Will he accept me when he learns the truth?

And most importantly… I wonder how he feels about tentacles?

I loved seeing Seta, a female kraken and how she progressed in this book. I would have liked more world building but that was about the only complaint I had. I loved the academy setting and how she was forced out of her shell by her roommate and MMC. Can’t wait for book 2.
