To Smoke by Elise Faber

3.5 Star

Darcy has always been overlooked by everyone. She has made it her business to blend into the background. This allows her to do what she wants when she wants to do it. When she misses her shift Morgan makes excuses for her and goes to check on her as he is worried. He had one night of perfect with Darcy years ago and he walked away. She wants him but doesn’t want him when they are mated. If they sever the link, they both lose their magic, but she doesn’t trust him. Will he break down her walls and win her over?

I didn’t enjoy this as much as other books by this author. I don’t really see how Darcy and Morgan worked through their issues. I felt it was insta relationship even thought they had a history. He never really explains to her why he walked away. She tells him her issues and that’s about it. It was well written, and you do want Darcy to get her happy ending since she had a shitty life. I just was left wanting a little more to the story. It will be interesting to see where the series is going.

In Flames by Elise Faber

Healer Suz works and then works some more.  She works so much she forgets to take care of herself.  No one else really steps up to help her and someone has to take care of everyone.  Graham has known Suz forever.  There is too much of an age difference for him to go for her but fate steps in and makes them mates.  Will they be able to find their balance?

I felt the first book was OK.  This was not the case with this book.  I really enjoyed reading this book.  I liked Suz and Graham a lot.  Seeing them go from friends to lovers/mates was awesome.  It transitioned nicely.  There was one scene where a woman was in labor and Suz siphons the pain from the woman.  That is the point Graham realizes how much Suz does for everyone and no one takes care of her.  He decides to step up and be that person and it was so sweet.  I loved how they did a lot of give and take to make things work.  Now to wait for the next one.

From Ashes by Elise Faber

4 Star

After Gabby was rescued she isn’t sure if they will let her stay if they knew her secret.  She tries to stay under the radar and away from others to protect them.  Mason has been widowed forever and hasn’t been interested in anyone since the death of his wife and son until Gabby.  Will they be able to work through their issues to find their happy ending?

This is a pretty good story.  The biggest issue I had was it says it is book 1 but it didn’t feel like book 1.  There were a lot of things that didn’t make sense because it was reference the original series this book is a spinoff of.  If I had read all of those it probably would have made more sense.  That goes for the world building as well.  I still have questions about the world and since I enjoyed this one I will be checking out the other series.  I also didn’t understand why Gabby felt her big bad dark secret was that bad.  It wasn’t and it didn’t help the story along to have this big bad attitude about it.  I enjoyed the relationship between Gabby and Mason.  They struggled with their pasts and tried to find a way to make their relationship work and work through their pain.  This was why a 4 star review.  I enjoyed how it was written and the struggle the two had to come together made it worth all the other issues.
