Tanglewood Witches by Genevieve Jack

3 Stars

Bound to each other by unexpected magic...

Hauled out of bed by a brutish soldier and tossed into a stone cell, the last thing Alena expects is to come face to face with wealthy businessman Orpheus. The rake almost tricked her into his bed once and is the one man she's tried to avoid ever since. To her utter dismay, she learns he's her new partner in a forced mission: to acquire a celestial weapon, one protected by the gods.

Orpheus never anticipated meeting anyone like Alena, let alone deceiving her. Could their immediate connection be due to a common secret—ancestral magic? To win this game of the gods thrust upon them, he'll have to earn her trust again and heal old wounds before it's too late.

The biggest surprise for both of them? Surviving their quest is just the beginning. Together, they have the potential to build a dynasty of powerful witches and wizards. All it will take is a book, a tree... and a dragon.

I loved the first part of this book with Alena and Orpheus. The story was cute and interesting to see how things they did led to what happens in future books. Where the book lost me was when it switched to one of their daughters. It just seemed out there because it wasn’t clearly marked in the book. All of a sudden we had new characters being named and I flipped back to see what I missed. It was ok. Interested in seeing how book two plays out.

Bargain with Shadow by Genevieve Jack

4 Stars

It takes a monster to stop a monster.

Light the candle.

Stand naked before the symbol.

Offer your blood.

The advocate will come.

I left my abusive crime boss husband expecting to start over from nothing. After all, the prenup I signed when I married him is ironclad. But when Tony uses a loophole in the law to go after my ancestral family home—the one I’m currently living in and my grandmother is dying in—I’m desperate to stop him.

My witch best friend Maeve offers a solution. She lends me a family spell to call a supernatural advocate to deal with Tony. After all, it takes a monster to stop a monster.

But when I follow her instructions, I’m not expecting the darkly handsome Damien to form from the shadows, or to learn that he’s been a prisoner of Maeve’s family for centuries. From the moment he accepts my bargain and drinks my blood, he awakens a passion in me, one charged with latent magic. Magic formidable enough to restore my true self. Magic that holds the promise of Damien’s freedom.

I loved this story so much. I loved how Eloise was a very sunshine character throughout this book and it worked with Damien’s grumpy persona. They worked well together. I was not a huge fan of Maeve. They were using Damien for their own reason and it wasn’t really explained why. The one big detractor is the cliffhanger ending which was a surprise as this author doesn’t usually do this. It was enjoyed enough I will check out the other books.

Dragon of New Orleans by Genevieve Jack

4 Star

300-year-old dragon Gabriel Blakemore has survived a coup from his world and moved to earth to live.  What he wasn’t planning on was being cursed by a witch.  He now has to find someone to save him, or he will die.  Raven Tanglewood is that woman.  The problem she has spent the last 5 years dying from brain cancer.  Gabriel gives her a second chance, but she has to find out a way to break the curse.

This one was interesting book.  You have a voodoo queen who is trying to seduce a dragon for some reason.  You have a woman who is dying from brain cancer saved but changed who finds out she has a very unique ancestor that helps figure out how to help Gabriel.
